An ex-convict who served 3 years for possession of a deadly weapon and 7 1/2 years for assaulting a corrections officer. While serving his 7 1/2 years sentence he read a play which amused him so much that he started a theatre group. To start the group he had to be attending school. Before going to prison he had dropped out in 7th grade, by the time he finished his sentence he had a 2 year college degree.
TRIVIA:
- He made his Broadway debut in 1985 in August Wilson's "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom".
- The role of Cosmo Jackson in _Hero Wanted (2008)_ (qv) was originally written with Dutton in mind. The role later went to 'Ben Cross (I)' (qv).
- Has twice been nominated for Broadway's Tony Award for plays written by 'August Wilson' (qv): in 1985, as Best Actor (Featured Role - Play) for "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom," and in 1990, as Best Actor (Play) for "The Piano Lesson."
- Lives on a farm in Howard County, Maryland.
- Was cast in _Halloween H20: 20 Years Later (1998)_ (qv) as a detective, but as script changes rolled in, the role was cut.
