He was in the "Ash Alley Singers", a folk music group in Tucson, AZ, in 1962-63. Another member of the group, Bob Kimmel, went on to form The Stone Poneys (without Alan, who was a theater major at the University of Arizona and not out of school yet), 'Linda Ronstadt' (qv)'s first group. They had one hit, "Different Drum", and put out two albums.
