What's Hot on SlashControl: Mary Tyler Moore and the Teddy Awards (TVSquad) - 11 hours ago
One of my favorite episodes of The Mary Tyler Moore Show is "Put On a Happy Face" from season three. It's the one where Mary is nominated for a Teddy Award, but everything in her life suddenly starts going wrong. It starts with a "hair bump," then moves on to a sprained foot, a nasty cold, a dress that comes back from the cleaners with a horrible purple spot on it, a broken hairdryer, and Ted as a date for the awards ceremony.

So Mary ends up going to the event with a dress borrowed from Rhoda that looks like something a grandmother (back then) might wear. It starts raining so the slipper she's wearing on her sore foot gets soggy, and then her false eyelash comes off just as they announce her name as the winner. Seriously, Mary still looks pretty fantastic even when her life goes to heck.

There aren't many shows that can make you laugh out loud even when you're watching them by yourself. The Mary Tyler Moore Show is definitely one of a kind. Here's the episode, straight from our sister site, SlashControl.

Seven questions about the Monk finale (TVSquad) - 12 hours ago
monk_team_copsA few more questions about the Monk finale before it disappears into TV immortality. Just some niggling thoughts that weren't really addressed in the two-part wrap up.

1. Why did Joey Kazarinski choose to kill Monk with poison?
Joey was a killer for hire. He used a bomb to kill Trudy, but shot Dr. Nash. They never said how Wendy Stroud was killed, just that she was buried under the sundial at the judge's house. So, when the judge offered Joey another payday -- killing Monk -- why didn't Joey choose a direct approach and shoot Adrian? Or he could have blown up Monk's apartment. There were any number of ways to kill him, but poisoning the wipes was perhaps the most complicated. And a ricin derivative? How did he manage to acquire that? If it had been arsenic or something, that could have been bought at a hardware store. They never really explained the poison or the reason for that method of murder.

What's next on the Salahis' 'To-Crash' list? SNL? (TVSquad) - 14 hours ago
The Salahis are currently the world's most notorious party crashers since that Soy Bomb guy's ecstasy kicked in during the 1998 Grammies.

But their brazen disregard for the laws of high-class parties and national security in the face of improving their unwritten social status could get them into an even bigger party -- late night television.

Word is the party crash test dummies are planning on appearing in an opening Obama skit on Saturday Night Live. Neither the network nor the couple have actually confirmed this, but take that with a grain of salt since we are talking about a couple who consider an invitation as a "speed bump."

Usher Brings His New Look Foundation to Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (TVGuide) - 15 hours ago

Extreme Makeover: Home Edition - Usher | Photo Credits: Katherine Bomboy/ABC

R&B star Usher signed his first recording contract when he was only 13 and broke onto the music scene with his first album at 16. Considering how much the singing sensation accomplished before his 18th birthday, it's fitting that his non-profit foundation, New Look, emphasizes the importance of youth in the community.

"I truly do feel like youth are going to dictate what tomorrow really is," Usher says of his 10-year-old organization. "But they need the tools to do it. By motivating them, you can only hope for...

Prove your Mythbusters knowledge to the world or die trying (TVSquad) - 15 hours ago
You've seen every Mythbusters episode the world has to offer. You have them all on a series of categorically detailed DVDs. You once turned down an opportunity to go out with Keira Knightley because you couldn't wait until the morning after to learn if a cannon-fired frozen chicken can penetrate a plane's cockpit window. But how well do you have them memorized?

Mental_Floss magazine puts your knowledge of the Mythbusters' mythbusting to the ultimate test with their "Myth...Busted?" quiz. Be warned. I scored an 8 out of 10 and the shame of defeat drove me to down an entire bottle of whiskey, disproving the myth that alcohol can't solve all of life's failures.

Was Dell right on this week's Private Practice? (TVSquad) - 15 hours ago
Private Practice, Chris LowellThis week's Private Practice brought a nice meaty part for Chris Lowell, who plays the part of surfer-dude-turned-receptionist-turned-midwife Dell Parker. If you haven't seen the episode yet and want to avoid spoilers, read no further!

When an explosion ripped through Dell's home, it landed his wife Heather and daughter Betsey in the hospital. The big reveal is that Heather had, in fact, NOT given up drugs -- as she'd led Dell to believe -- and was cooking up some meth in the kitchen with Betsey in the next room. While Betsey escaped mostly unscathed, the explosion caused severe burns on Heather's entire body.

At the hospital, Dell was seriously ticked at his wife, telling her nearly comatose body that, in essence, he hated her and hoped she would die. The other part of the equation is that Dell refused to let Betsey see her mother, wanting to shield her from the monster -- both figuratively and physically -- that her mother encompassed.

So what do you think? Should Dell have allowed Betsey to see her mother at the hospital? And was Pete right in wanting to force the issue?

Watch clips and episodes of Private Practice at SlashControl, and read my interview with Chris Lowell at AOL's InsideTV.

The Wicked truth is Idina Menzel wants to be on Glee (TVSquad) - 16 hours ago
idina_menzel_cdCould it be that the cool show for guest appearances is going to be Glee? It well may be the case after Kristin Chenoweth's musical showstopper last October. Kristin's Tony-award winning costar from Wicked, Idina Menzel, wants to do Glee. How do we know? Her husband, Private Practice's Taye Diggs, confirmed it.

There's more to it than just that. Apparently the Glee fans -- Gleeks -- have noticed the remarkable resemblance between Idina and Lea Michele.

Why, she could be/play Lea's mother! They look alike and they are both big time Broadway belters. We've heard Lea's incredibly rendition of "Defying Gravity," the song that made Idina a star, on Glee, too.

Adam Lambert booked on The View (TVSquad) - 18 hours ago
adam_lambert_foxThe on-again, off-again love affair between ABC and American Idol star Adam Lambert is making my head spin. In the past week or so, still stinging over Lambert's over the top performance at the American Music Awards, ABC dropped Adam Lambert appearances on Good Morning American, Jimmy Kimmel Live and New Year's Rockin' Eve.

Adam absolved ABC of responsibility for the cancellations. He Tweeted that it was pressure from the FCC. Then the folks at GLAAD weighed in, coming to Adam's defense. That was followed by the announcement that Adam is now set to appear on ABC's The View on Thursday, December 10. He'll also be on Barbara Walters' Most Fascinating People special on December 9.

New Year brings Inbetweeners sitcom to BBC America (TVSquad) - 18 hours ago
The award-winning Inbetweeners is coming to BBC America in 2010.One of the best British comedies you've never heard of is headed to BBC America in early 2010.

The Inbetweeners features a handful of awkward young men constantly stuck, well, "in between" childhood and adulthood, loneliness and popularity, romance and dignity, etc. The electric wit of the show's dialogue helped it knock down "Best New Sitcom of 2008" at the British Comedy Awards.

Written and created by Damon Beesley and Iain Morris (Peep Show, Flight of the Conchords). the show stars Simon Bird, Joe Thomas, James Buckley and Blake Harrison as the hopelessly awhward teens struggling through a new school in suburban Britain.

Review: White Collar - Free Fall (TVSquad) - 20 hours ago
White Collar
(S01E07) "You can check my University of Phoenix online degree. Go Cardinals." - lawyer Moz

The previews for this fall finale promised there would be an ending that we'd never see coming. That's usually a huge help in actually figuring out what the "surprise" ending is to a TV show. If we don't expect it, we know what to not expect and we can often figure out what happens. I didn't see this ending coming at all. I mean, I knew that the guy we thought was the bad guy wasn't really part of the solution. That was just a red herring. But I didn't expect who was at the door and who was in the chair in the final scene.

Thank God this show is coming back next month and not in March like so many other shows seem to be doing.

Starz set to spill Spartacus: Blood and Sand in January (TVSquad) - 20 hours ago
Blood and Sand will have everyone saying, "I am Spartacus!"

Okay. No, I'm not. But if Starz's Spartacus: Blood and Sand is any good, it could reintroduce a new generation of fans to the legend of a slave taking on an empire. The original Stanley Kubrick-directed classic is an immortal part of entertainment history, but it's one of those films that you don't see on TV much in the age of DVDs.

According to a network release, Starz will premiere their take on Spartacus in 13 one-hour episodes kicking off Friday, January 22nd at 10 p.m. If you see previews for the series and get flashbacks to 300, you're not imagining things. It's clear the producers tapped into that stylized, graphic novel style for the show's visuals.

Shot in New Zealand, the show employs CGI, digital imaging tricks and other cinematic effects to sweeten the show's look.

Review: Dollhouse - The Left Hand (TVSquad) - 22 hours ago
Dollhouse(S02E06) In our last episode, our hero Echo was tied to a table and getting her brain fried by the evil and deranged Bennett Halverson. And now, part two ...

Admittedly, the "two parts in a single night" works well with this show and its current penchant for cliffhanger endings. Plus we don't have to wait until next week to see how our heroine Echo gets out of her current trap.

Tonight we also discovered a new application for Dollhouse technology: the ability to experience other people's memories without actually taking their personality.

More on Lisa Kudrow's appearance on Cougar Town (TVSquad) - 22 hours ago
Cougar TownIt was bound to happen. We even wrote about it this past July. While a reunion show probably won't happen, it's always news when two cast members from the former hit sitcom Friends appear on screen together. In this case, it's Lisa Kudrow who will be guest-starring on Courteney Cox's sitcom, Cougar Town.

Of course, as a twist, they will not be friends in Kudrow's visit, but rather enemies. Kudrow plays a dermatologist that Cox's character goes to see. Will this be any different than Jennifer Aniston's appearance on Dirt playing a rival of Courteney Cox on that show?

Shatner takes on Limbaugh on upcoming Raw Nerve (TVSquad) - 22 hours ago
William Shatner takes on Rush Limbaugh on Raw Nerve. It'll be a feast for the eyes for anyone who loves to watch doughy, puffed up, bombastic old men when Rush Limbaugh sits down with William Shatner on the Biography Channel series, Raw Nerve.

Airing this Sunday after taping last summer, the Shatner Vs. Limbaugh clash touches on everything from family background to health care. But the exchange looks like a couple aging members of a country club debating stock tips at the 19th hole.

I have no interest in the inevitable political jibber-jabber headed our way Sunday. But, I'd love to see these two square off over who gets the last piece of lasagna. The fatty grunts alone would blow out your TV speakers.

Review: Dollhouse - The Public Eye (TVSquad) - 1 day ago
Dollhouse(S02E05) This was truly an excellent episode of Dollhouse. The show has improved leaps and bounds, and I can't wait to see the developments Joss has waiting for us next season ... oh. Oh yeah. Forgot about that.

Despite the imminent cancellation, this was an excellent episode with so many twists and turns you'd think it was the SR1 in California. Okay, Daniel Perrin is a Doll (sort of) and his wife is his handler (making her more of a fake than him). The mysterious Bennett in the D.C. Dollhouse has a past with Caroline, Echo's original personality. And it all ends in a cliffhanger making this the perfect night for a two-parter.

When Echo (as Bree) and Perrin had their scenes together, I couldn't help but flash back to several scenes from the Buffy and Angel series which had Wesley together with Faith. Faith tortured Wesley in one of those, I recall. Fortunately, no grudges were held between series.

Did anybody else notice that Kilo was played by Maurissa Tancharoen, who is engaged to Jed Whedon (Joss' brother) and was one of the co-writers of Dr. Horrible's Sing-a-long Blog? If you didn't, then you should have. She's also a writer for this series and co-wrote the last episode.

Monk: Mr. Monk and the End (Part 2) - Series Finale (TVSquad) - 1 day ago
monk_natalie_usa
(S08E16)
The pressure of writing the last episode must be tremendous. Especially for a long-running show like Monk. The writers have to tie up loose ends, satisfy viewers' desire for the characters, and leave fans with a sense of closure. Closure, in fact, is the word Dr. Bell used with Adrian. Monk was looking for it and so were we.

But the ending is tough. There have been some shows that have stumbled badly at the end. Seinfeld, for instance, was a real stinker. But the memory of Newhart, which harkened back to The Bob Newhart Show may be the best-ever. Now, in the broader scheme of things, Seinfeld was a much better series than Newhart; in every way but the ending. Which brings us back to Monk. How did the writers navigate the Monk finale? Follow me after the jump and I'll tell you all about it.

Review: Stargate Universe - Justice (TVSquad) - 1 day ago
Stargate Universe: Justice
(S01E10) "You put ordinary people under enough stress, I think you'll find they're capable of anything. - Dr. Rush

While watching this episode of Stargate Universe, I kept thinking of the "Court Martial" episode of the original Star Trek series. Captain Kirk is tried for the wrongful death of a crewmate, but Spock discovers via a 3D chess game that the computer's system has been tampered with and presents the evidence at the trial. Yes, I'm that geeky.

Ok, so that's about all these episodes have in common, and there's only so much you can do with the "trial in space" story. It boils down to the characters, and in this instance, the battle lines were drawn even further in this compelling little murder mystery.
