• Co-editor Walter Murch started working immediately after completing his previous movie, Jarhead. He had to spend 6 weeks watching all the 170 hours of footage shot and watching the first assembly put up by Corina Stavila.
• Coppola was introduced to the story upon which the film is based by the religious scholar Wendy Doniger, a childhood friend of his.
• The modestly-budgeted film was financed by the director's successful vineyard in California.
• The first cut was close to three hours. It contains a sub-plot shot (also included in the novella) featuring the 1938 student radicals and Secret Police associating Dominic with them. The sub-plot was ultimately dropped upon suggestion by co-editor Walter Murch in order to keep the story more personal and reaching the intended two hour movie goal.
