  • The first cut was close to three hours. It contains a sub-plot shot (also included in the novella) featuring the 1938 student radicals and Secret Police associating Dominic with them. The sub-plot was ultimately dropped upon suggestion by co-editor Walter Murch in order to keep the story more personal and reaching the intended two hour movie goal.
  • Co-editor Walter Murch started working immediately after completing his previous movie, Jarhead. He had to spend 6 weeks watching all the 170 hours of footage shot and watching the first assembly put up by Corina Stavila.
  • Languages spoken in the film are English, Romanian, French, Italian, Mandarin, German, Russian, Latin, Armenian, Sanskrit, Egyptian (not Arabic) and Babylonian. The ancient Sanskrit, Egyptian and Babylonian are authentic, researched in ancient texts and manuscripts by a team of expert linguists. The film also includes an artificial, "made-up" language, done with such integrity that it could provide the rudimentary basis of a new language.
  • Over 170 hours of footage were shot.
