Sherlock Holmes is as dashing as ever, but with a little secret: Dr. Watson is the brains behind the operation. When Reginald Kincaid, the actor he has hired to play Holmes becomes insufferable, Watson fires him and tries to go out on his own, but finds that he has done too good a job building Holmes up in the public's mind.

Movie Trivia/Goofs

Movie Goof (continuity error): When Lord Smythwick and Inspector Lestrade are leaving Holme's apartment, Holmes has partly closed the door with the Inspector partly turned towards Holmes. The next scene has the door fully opened with the Inspector facing Holmes. Then Holmes closes the door in the Inspectors face.
Movie Goof (continuity error): When Sherlock Holmes is looking at Leslie Giles undressing, he makes a sound when she removes one stocking. Without removing the other she stands up and opens the door to check if someone's there. When she opens the door, both stockings are removed.
The opening sequence of the movie is inspired by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's original Sherlock Holmes story "The Red-Headed League." In the story, Sherlock Holmes captures John Clay and his accomplice, Archie. John Clay even calls out at one point, "Jump, Archie, and I'll swing for it!"
Movie Goof (continuity error): When Inspector Lestrade leaves the British Mint in a carriage, there is just him and the driver. When he arrives at Gile's house, he now has two policemen with him and the driver.
