- Movie Goof (errors in geography): The young Jimmy appears to have a broad Lancashire accent (notice the 'rhotic 'r' when he tells the careers officer that he wants to be a 'footballer')- not consistent with the broad Sheffield accent of Jimmy Muir and the location where the film is set. Despite Emily Lloyd's shaky attempt at an Irish accent, Jimmy's dad also appears to have a mixed accent that is hard to place. The original actor is from Birmingham, but in some scenes he almost sounds 'Geordie'.
- Sean Bean's character is based on writer-director Maria Giese's husband who also hails from Bean's hometown of Sheffield in the north of England.
- Movie Goof (factual errors): During the football season in question, 1995/1996, Sheffield United were in the first division. This is confirmed by a scene in the betting shop where Sheffield United appears on a betting board for Division 1 sides. However, regularly during the film, Sheffield United play Premiership teams Arsenal and Leeds United in December. This is impossible, given Sheffield United's division. The FA Cup semi-final, played at Bramall Lane in the film, would not be held there. All FA-Cup semi-finals are played at a neutral ground.
- Movie Goof (factual errors): Jimmy's dad, brother Russ and best friend Mac all work in a Sheffield Coal Mine, despite the fact that all the pits in South Yorkshire were closed by 1993 - 3 years before the film is set.
