Jennifer Connelly's son, Kai was in the film, she was holding him in the scene in which Fielding was at the church.
Jennifer Connelly also portrayed a character named Sarah Williams in Labyrinth, which was released 13 prior to Waking the Dead.
Among those who auditioned for the role of Sarah Williams included Jessica Alba, Christina Applegate, Drew Barrymore, Neve Campbell, Cameron Diaz, Brittany Murphy, Christina Ricci, Winona Ryder, Tori Spelling, Britney Spears, Hilary Swank and Liv Tyler. The role eventually went to Jennifer Connelly.
Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise and Kevin Spacey were considered for the role of Fielding Pierce. The role went to Billy Crudup.
