  • CAMEO(Jim McCann): The founder and CEO of 1-800-FLOWERS.COM, appears as a customer in a deleted flower shop scene when Reed tries to soothe the tense customers by asking them to name their favorite love song.
  • As he often does in his movies, Garry Marshall cast many of his family members in small roles in this movie: Reed's coworker Nikki is played by Marshall's daughter Kathleen Marshall; Mr. Schwabbe is played by his son Scott Marshall; grandchildren Sam Marshall and Lily Marshall-Fricker play "Soccer son" and "Lily," respectively; wife Barbara Marshall plays the nurse who tells Julia where Harrison is eating dinner; and niece Tracy Reiner plays a French photographer. Marshall also shot a scene with his sister, director 'Penny Marshall' (I), in it, but it didn't make the final cut.

  • Kathy Bates originally played Frankie in the play "Frankie and Johnny at the Clair de Lune," which was turned into the film Frankie and Johnny, directed by Garry Marshall. This was filmed before Misery became a hit and turned Bates into a well-known actress, so she was not cast in the film version. In this film, she finally works with Marshall.
  • Jennifer Aniston, Sandra Bullock and Jodie Foster all turned down the role of Captain Kate Hazeltine.
  • When we see Julia Roberts and Bradley Cooper for the first time, the captain says "...three days of rain". The two starred together on Broadway in a play called "Three Days of Rain" in 2006. It received terrible reviews and ran for just 70 performances.
  • At the time this movie was released the star-studded cast had collectively been nominated for 16 acting Oscars during their careers, including four wins.   • Fernanda Romero (II) was considered for the role of Morley Clarkson, but it went to Jessica Alba.
  • When Edgar is at the cemetery before the movie starts, on the movie screen is the title of the movie, Hot Spell (1958), and pictures the two main characters. He mentions that the woman on the screen is his trifecta. When asked if he means literally the actress on the screen. He says "yes, literally." The actress on the screen is Shirley MacLaine, who plays his wife in the movie.
