Tom Ripley is a charismatic sociopath who makes his way in mid-'50s New York as a rest room attendant and pianist. His skill however is in impersonating other people, forging handwriting and running second-rate scams. Unhappy with his own life, he kills and takes on the persona of somebody else.

Movie Goof (continuity error): When Freddie and Dickie are talking on the boat, Freddie has a drink in his left hand, and stirs it nervously with his right. From the reverse angle, the drink is in his right hand and there is no stirring.
Movie Goof (continuity error): When Freddie takes the tiller from Dickie, the position of his hand jumps between the front shot and the reverse shot.
Jude Law learned to play the saxophone and Matt Damon learned to play the piano for this film. Damon's training enabled him to recreate the proper keyboard fingering; however, the music heard in the film is played by Sally Heath (the Bach) and Gabriel Yared (the Vivaldi).
Dickie's suicide note is dated 6 January 1959, director Anthony Minghella's fifth birthday.
