Michael Harding (Penn Badgley) returns home from military school to find his mother (Sela Ward) happily in love and living with her new boyfriend, David (Dylan Walsh). As the two men get to know each other, Michael becomes more and more suspicious of the man who is always there with a helpful hand. Is he really the man of her dreams or could David be hiding a dark side?

A scene in the trailer in which a buzz saw swings back and forth mere inches away from a character's face was cut from the film for pacing reasons, but it had already been used in multiple advertising materials before it was trimmed from the final release of the film.
Movie Goof (continuity error): When Michael sneaks into the basement, pay attention to the scene with the cell phone. Cell phone breaks before hitting the ground and then the cell phone magically appears back on the deep freeze in the next scene.
Movie Goof (revealing mistake): When David drowns Susan's friend in the pool, her eyes move, after she is dead.
Movie Goof (incorrectly regarded as a mistake): In the beginning David Harris cuts himself and places a tissue on the left side of his chin. As he leaves the bathroom and turns around for the camera shot, the tissue is on the right side of his chin. This is because the image is a mirror shot, so it appears that the tissue is on the wrong side.
