Movie Trivia/Goofs

  • According to writer Arthur Miller, Clark Gable had already seen a rough cut of the movie by the last day of filming, and said, "This is the best picture I have made, and it's the only time I've been able to act."
  • The biplane that Guido flies is a 1943 Meyers OTW. It's still registered today to a couple in Northern California.
  • Movie Goof (continuity error): When the rodeo PA announcer introduces Perce Howland [Montgomery Clift] on a bucking horse, he says Howland is from "White River, Wyoming." Howland corrects him with a shouted "California, not Wyoming." This reinforces Howland's remark at the pay phone that he was trying to call home but the operator kept giving him Wyoming rather than California. When Howland later mounts a Brahma bull, the PA announcer says, "Perce Howland of Black Hills, Colorado." Perce said he had recently been in Colorado, so the confusion of origins is understandable and perhaps intentional.
  • Originally written as a short story by Arthur Miller while awaiting his own divorce in Reno prior to marrying Marilyn Monroe.
