As the English and French soldiers battle for control of the North American colonies in the 18th century, the settlers and native Americans are forced to take sides. Cora and her sister Alice unwittingly walk into trouble but are saved by Hawkeye, an orphaned settler adopted by the last of the Mohicans.

Mike Phillips character is listed as "Sachem" in the end credits. This is not a name; it is a title that means "elder", "wise one", or "chief". The character's actual name is "Tamenund", although this name is never used in the film.
Movie Goof (continuity error): Maj. Duncan delivers a dispatch to Gen. Web. After he reads it, Gen. Web puts it completely rolled up and straight ahead in front of him. Subsequently it appears placed crosswise and a little open.
Movie Goof (revealing mistake): Gray rock-textured canvas, presumably covering modern trail signs or graffiti, is clearly visible in final scenes. Hawkeye bumps a canvas while running through underpass, and a larger portion is visible as he returns to embrace Cora after Magua's death.
During the siege scenes, large mortars are seen to fire huge cannon balls at the fort. On one day while attempting to capture the projectiles arcing through the air, basketballs spray painted black were actually fired from the mortars. Problem was, most of them either burned up in the barrel or briefly flamed in the air for several feet before falling to earth.
