Ben Foster was suppose to play the role of Eddie O'Hare, but gave the role to his brother Jon Foster instead because he thought it was better suited for him.
The deceased Cole boys, Thomas and Timothy, were played by director/screenwriter Tod Williams's cousins Tod Harrison Williams and Carter Williams, and the photographs featured in the film are their actual childhood photos.
The last minute of the movie was filmed in the United Methodist Church in Pleasantville, NY. The crew built a two story racquetball court in order for Jeff Bridges to open to door in the floor and walk down the stairs
The photograph of Marion (Kim Basinger) and the boys' feet was taken the first day of the shoot; the feet belong producer Anne Carey's sons.
