The Cable Guy Goofs/Mistakes
- Movie Goof (errors in geography): The satellite dish Chip falls into is pointing straight up. Satellite dishes track satellites in geosynchronous orbit, which must orbit at the equator. For the satellite dish to be pointing straight up, it must be on the equator.
- Movie Goof (continuity error): At Steven's parents' house, Steven calls Chip a "bastard" and covers his mouth in shock at what he said. In the next shot, his hand is no longer over his mouth.
- Movie Goof (continuity error): Steven drops the prison phone twice.
- Movie Goof (factual errors): In the very first scene, Steven is flipping through channels on the TV in his new apartment and, although slightly scrambled, he is getting the cable shows to come through. However, at that point he is waiting for the cable guy to install his cable and he doesn't even have a wall hook-up to watch basic cable. Therefore, if he were to flip through the channels of his TV, he would only get "scramble" and would not be able to see anything playing on TV.
- Movie Goof (revealing mistake): In the bathroom scene when Chip Douglas is beating up Ray (Owen Wilson) he throws him onto the hand dryer while it's on and makes him suck on it showing his face blowing up. When Ray takes his mouth off there was clearly no air coming out to begin with because his hair is standing still while he is standing in front of it.
- Movie Goof (continuity error): After Steven's mother incorrectly guesses during "Porno Password", Steven puts his hand to his head twice.
- Movie Goof (revealing mistake): During the basketball game at the gym, after Chip shatters the backboard, he falls down into the glass on the floor. However you can clearly see an outline within the shattered glass, where he should land.
- Movie Goof (continuity error): During the jousting scene when Steven hits Chip with the lance, Chip's lance and shield fly the opposite way Chip does, but when Chip hits the ground they are right next to him.
- Movie Goof (continuity error): The telephone handset suddenly appears in Chip's hand as he talks to Steven in jail.
- Movie Goof (factual errors): Steven and Robin have just started to watch Sleepless in Seattle having missed only the first few minutes, but the scene shown when the cable comes back on is from the middle of the movie.
- Movie Goof (errors made by characters, possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): At the karaoke party, Chip sings "Somebody to Love" by Jefferson Airplane, which he says was featured in Gimme Shelter (1970), the documentary about The Rolling Stones concert at Altamont. Jefferson Airplane plays "The Other Side of This Life" in the movie, not "Somebody to Love."
- Movie Goof (audio/visual unsynchronized): The answering machine owned by Steven is a digital machine. It does not use a tape to record messages. Therefore, when Steven hits the "skip" button, you should not hear the tape fast forwarding, because there isn't one. Also, you should not hear the tape clicking on a new message.
- Movie Goof (continuity error): While they are sitting in the van after Chip's and Steven's trip to the satellite dish, Chip gives a very corny, contrived smile. In the next shot, Chip is not smiling.
- Movie Goof (continuity error): SPOILER: When seen from above, the water-filled satellite dish at the end of the movie appears to be completely dry.
- Movie Goof (continuity error): SPOILER: When Steven returns to the office to find the desktop "movie" that the Cable Guy made showing Steven and Robin talking about Hal, Hal sees a different version of them on the couch than the original scene, right before Steven and Robin watched Sleepless in Seattle.
- Movie Goof (revealing mistake): SPOILER: At the very end of the movie when "Chip" is being taken away in the helicopter, we can clearly see the final scenes are at night, yet the upward shots of the paramedic reveal a blue screen in the helicopter's roof windows.
- Movie Goof (continuity error): SPOILER: In the end, Chip is hanging from a tower holding on to arm of the main character near the dish. He falls down and lands in the exact middle of the dish. In more distant shots, the tower is nowhere near the dish.
- Movie Goof (factual errors): SPOILER: At the end of the movie, the satellite fills with rain water. Satellite dishes have a hole in the center to prevent this from happening.
