A melancholy romance about a farmers wife who meets a photographer who’s way of life that is completely foreign to her leading her to become attracted to him. She is confronted with the difficult decision to go on with the relationship thus leaving her family, or to stay and continue her ordinary life until her death. Meryl Streep was nominated for an Oscar for her excellent performance.

  • Movie Goof (anachronisms): Robert has leatherman, but it wasn't invented until 1979.
  • Movie Goof (anachronisms): The song, "It Was Almost like a Song" was not written until 1977. There is no way it could have been playing on Francesca's kitchen radio in 1965.
  • Cher and Isabella Rossellini were two other actresses in contention for the female lead.
  • Movie Goof (continuity error): When Francesca is driving with him in his truck to initially show him where the bridge is, there is no sunshine on Robert's shoulders. Suddenly, in the next shot it's on his right shoulder, then the next shot switches to his left and then back again.
