• For the movie Denzel Washington studied martial arts under Bruce Lee's protégé Dan Inosanto.
• In Arabic, Hebrew, and Aramaic, Eli can be a variant on the name of God. The suffix "i" indicates first person singular possession, i.e., "my El" or "my God".
• Movie Goof (errors in geography): Eli's "mission" was to head west. That's all he knew. But the golden gate bridge goes north to south. To get there from the east (and see San Francisco on the far side) he would've had to be traveling south (for at least 30 miles) on highway 101. (since it shows he mostly takes highways and freeways.)
• The reason the cannibals' hands shake is because they suffer from Kuru disease. a form of Kreutzfeld Jakob Disease caused by eating human flesh. This is known to cause the limbs to shake, which is why people check Eli's hands throughout the movie.
