Tanner uses the word crud (or cruddy) 11 times during the course of the film.
Throughout the film, Morris Buttermaker (Walter Matthau) is constantly drinking beer, yet he is seldom seen drinking the same brand. Buttermaker is seen at various times in the film drinking Budweiser, Miller High Life, Schlitz "Kingers", Pabst Blue Ribbon, and original Coors. He is, however, shown drinking Budweiser on several occasions.
Movie Goof (continuity error): When the Bears are playing the Yankees in the championship game, you can hear the announcer state that the bears are leading 1-0. However, a later shot of the scoreboard shows that the Yankees were actually the first team to score.
Movie Goof (continuity error): In the Dugout, during the final game against the Yankees, Coach Buttermaker's beer alternates between a 16 ounce can of Coors to a small Red Stripe-like bottle between shots.
