Set 5 years after the end of Superman II, the film begins when Superman returns to discover his absence allowed Lex Luthor to walk free, and that those he was closest too felt abandoned and have moved on. Movie Trivia/Goofs

→ View All
  • In one of the scenes with Lex's Train set a sign saying 'Smallville' can be seen briefly.
  • Movie Goof (incorrectly regarded as a mistake): When the shuttle engine started, the airplane should have been destroyed. The wings of a commercial airplane are not designed to stand supersonic speed. However, the plane wouldn't immediately hit supersonic speeds. Plus, with the two crafts connected as they were, it's possible they *never* would've hit supersonic speeds, just speeds far in excess of design specs.
  • The tattoo on the back of Brutus' head is a fairly accurate representation of the clown makeup worn by John Wayne Gacy, a famous serial killer.
  • Lex Luthor says, "To the primitive mind, any sufficiently advanced technology would be indistinguishable from magic," which is a paraphrase of an Arthur C. Clarke quote, "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" ("Profiles of the Future," 1961). Clarke is mentioned in the closing credits of the film for this reason.
