Director M. Night Shyamalan cites The Birds, Night of the Living Dead, and Invasion of the Body Snatchers as the influences for this film.
Movie Goof (incorrectly regarded as a mistake): They nail boards on the outside of inward-opening doors. Obviously this isn't going to prevent the doors from being opened, but anything is better than nothing and they're panicking anyway.
Movie Goof (continuity error): The basement door is green in every shot except the very last one when Merrill is opening the door to go up and check for the "all clear" - it is a close-up of the handle and the door is painted brown.
Movie Goof (continuity error): At the beginning of the film, the camera looks to the backyard and it is dark out. When the men run outside, it is midday, and there is a shadow on the front of the house.
