Running with Scissors

Young Augusten Burroughs absorbs experiences that could make for a shocking memoir: the son of an alcoholic father and an unstable mother (Bening), he's handed off to his mother's therapist, Dr. Finch, and spends his adolescent years as a member of Finch's bizarre extended family.

Movie Trivia/Goofs

  • Movie Goof (anachronisms): The labels on Deirdre's pill vials in the 1978 segment are in a proportional font, and appear to be laser-printed. In 1978, prescription labels would have been prepared on a typewriter with a monospace font.
  • Movie Goof (anachronisms): When Augusten's mother receives a rejection from the New Yorker magazine, the return address is "4 Times Square" (the magazine's current address). In the 1970s, the address was "25 W. 43rd St.," where they had been for five decades.
  • Julianne Moore was originally attached to play Deirdre Burroughs.
  • Movie Goof (revealing mistake): There are two identical scenes of the family station wagon driving by. In both scenes, the station wagon passes the same section of street (including a blue 1965 Chevy Impala parked along the curb).
