In 1970s Iran, Marjane 'Marji' Statrapi watches events through her young eyes and her idealistic family of a long dream being fulfilled of the hated Shah's defeat in the Iranian Revolution of 1979. However as Marji grows up, she witnesses first hand how the new Iran, now ruled by Islamic fundamentalists, has become a repressive tyranny on its own.

Movie Goof (continuity error): When it is 1992, Marji marries. Her mother says her that she is just 21 years old. But in last minutes of movie, it is written 22.11.1969 as her date of birth. So either that date or the 1992 date of marriage must be wrong.
Wellington, New Zealand - In July, 2008 the Iranian embassy angrily protested the screening of Persepolis during the 37th Wellington Film Festival.
Marjane Satrapi insisted that Chiara Mastroianni sing "Eye of the Tiger" off-key.
Movie Goof (factual errors): The departures board at Paris Orly at the beginning has Cincinnati misspelled as "Cincinatti".
