A multi-layered film about the night life in taxi’s in different metropolitan cities. Jim Jarmusch takes us to 5 cities where people take taxi’s to meet up with each other and then when all's said and done take taxi’s to eventually go away from each other.

The name of New York taxi driver (Helmut) was taken from a member of the crew of Down by Law (1986), also directed by Jim Jarmusch.
The Roman taxi driver (Roberto Benigni) has an 8-ball as a gearstick knob. In Down by Law (1986), Benigni played a character who killed a man using an 8-ball.
The song the Rome taxi driver tries to sing is the traditional song, "The Streets of Laredo", also known as "The Cowboy's Lament".
The original title of the film was (all small characters) "lanewyorkparisromehelsinki".
