  • Movie Goof (anachronisms): Brian's room features a poster of Suicidal Tendencies' "The Art of Rebellion", which did not come out in 1991, when the events are taking place, but in 1992 (June).
  • Movie Goof (anachronisms): Car approaches traffic signal. Yellow light is a matrix of LEDs, but all yellow traffic lights in 1987 were incandescent bulbs.
  • Original novelist Scott Heim (II) wrote a draft screenplay which he then entered into the Sundance screenwriting lab. Gregg Araki was on the judging panel and the two became friends. Eventually it was mooted that Araki himself tackle the material.
  • To prepare for his role, actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt spent a week visiting cities and towns in Kansas where the book is set. Scott Heim (II), author of the original novel, guided him around the locations and had him meet the actual people on whom the characters are based.
