Set on an idyllic Greek island, the plot serves as a background for a wealth of ABBA hit songs. Donna, an independent, single mother who owns a small hotel on the island is about to let go of Sophie, the spirited young daughter she's raised alone. But Sophie has secretly invited three of her mother's ex-lovers in the hopes of finding her father.

Benny Andersson, former ABBA member and co-composer of the songs, calls Meryl Streep "a miracle". Meryl Streep came to Stockholm to do her vocal for the song "The Winner Takes it All". She finished it in one take.
Movie Goof (continuity error): When Rosie is walking down the dock, getting in the boat, and falling off into the water, she is wearing two large hoop earrings. When she climbs on board Bill's boat, her left earring is missing.
Movie Goof (errors made by characters, possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): (At 1:11:00) During the scene where Meryl Streep is trying to get the dinner area set up, she refers to actress Leonie Hill by her real name instead of her character's name Ariana ("Carlos, get the meat out of the heat. Put a cover on that thing. That's beautiful. And tell...Leonie, help him get the...Harry, what are you doing here?")
Movie Goof (continuity error): In the scene where Sophie and her brides maids are trying on their dresses she uses safety pins to shorten the chain straps. When Skye comes in the pins are no longer visible, only the chains.
