The original Broadway production of "Lovers and Other Strangers" written by actors Renée Taylor and Joseph Bologna opened on September 18, 1968 at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre and ran for 70 performances. Renée Taylor also performed in the stage play and wrote the screenplay with her husband Joseph Bologna.
Anne Meara's husband, Jerry Stiller and daughter, Amy Stiller, make a cameo appearance at the wedding reception.
Movie Goof (crew or equipment visible): Near the beginning of the movie, when Gig Young and Cloris Leachman are sitting on the couch with a mirror behind them, you can see a reflection of a crew member in the mirror as he tries to move out of the shot.
The Oscar-winning song - "For All We Know" - from this movie was performed by Petula Clark at the Academy Awards (April 15, 1971) even though the song was a hit for The Carpenters. In fact, a small controversy occurred when the duo was not selected to perform the song at the ceremony, even though they were the one of the most popular music acts at the time.
