"Give a father no options and you leave him no choice."

John Q is a 2002 film by Nick Cassavetes; starring Denzel Washington as John Quincy Archibald, a father and husband whose son is diagnosed with an enlarged heart and then finds out he cannot receive a transplant because HMO insurance will not cover it. Therefore, he decides to take a hospital full of patients hostage until the hospital puts his son's name on the donor's list.

Movie Trivia/Goofs

Movie Goof (continuity error): After John is attacked by Mitch with a scalpel, he handcuffs him to a heater against the wall. Later we find Mitch is handcuffed to the security guard as John asks the hostages to sign his will.
Movie Goof (crew or equipment visible): When Dr. Turner passes through the doors into the glass corridor where John takes him hostage, you can see the feet of crew members behind the door below the white backdrop.
The movie was shot in a group of provincial government buildings in Toronto. Adjacent to filming is a hospital. On at least one occasion, filming blocked off the access to the real emergency room of the real hospital.
The scene where George W. Bush is speaking about health care while John and Denise are watching TV was also shot with footage of Al Gore because the election was between the time of shooting and release.
