Joe Dirt is a janitor with a mullet hairdo, acid-washed jeans and a dream to find the parents that he lost at the Grand Canyon when he was a belligerent, trailer park-raised eight-year-old. Now, blasting Van Halen in his jacked-up economy car, the irrepressibly optimistic Joe hits the road alone in search of his folks.

Movie Trivia/Goofs

Movie Goof (continuity error): When Joe kicks over the shelves of clowns, his dad has a beer can in his hand in one shot, but not the others.
The scene in which Joe, while working at the quarter toss booth at the carnival, sprays the plates down with PAM is a reference to his 1998 stand-up special Take The Hit in which he joked about trying to make a quarter land on a plate sprayed with PAM at a carnival.
Movie Goof (continuity error): When Robbie reads the letter Brandi left for him about Joe's parents to Joe, Robbie says "Dear Robbie", but in the shot of the letter it just says "Robbie".
Roseanne and Gary Busey were originally cast as Joe Dirt's parents. After shooting the scene director Dennie Gordon decided that Roseanne's star-power was too distracting, and opted to re-shoot the scene with Caroline Aaron and Fred Ward.
