I Married a Witch

Movie (1942)

A delightful comedy from the golden age of Hollywood, based on an unfinished novel by Throne Smith. A witch and her sorcerer father who were burned at the stake several centuries ago return to the present to haunt the descendant of the man who condemned them. Ok, it doesn't sound funny, but it is! Academy Award Nominations: Best Scoring of a Dramatic or Comedic Picture.

Movie Trivia/Goofs

  • Dalton Trumbo was a contributing writer, but left because his interpretation of the novel differed from producer Preston Sturges. Sturges also left the production (and declined onscreen credit) because of artistic differences with director René Clair
  • The biggest misconception about this movie is that it is the basis for Bewitched. It's completely untrue. The only thing the two have in common is a witch marrying a mortal. Darren's ancestors have nothing to do with Samantha or her ancestors. The only member of Jennifer's family we meet is her father, nor are we exposed to any other witches or warlocks. Samantha doesn't lose her powers because she falls in love.
  • Joel McCrea was initially cast as the lead, but declined the role because he didn't want to work again with Veronica Lake, his co-star in Sullivan's Travels.
  • Movie Goof (anachronisms): The film opens with a scene of Puritans in the Massachusetts colony burning witches. No-one was ever burned for witchcraft in America. The accused witches of Salem, Massachusetts, and its environs were hanged, with the exception of Giles Corey, who was pressed to death with rocks.
