Movie (1999)


Indian-based traditional family of Pundit Darbar (Vikram Gokhale) gets a visit from Sameer Rafilini (Salman Khan), from Italy, who has come as a pupil to learn music and singing. Darbar and his family accept him. Sameer meets Nandini (Aishwarya Rai), Darbar's daughter, and both fall in love. But Darbar wants Nandini to wed Vanraj (Ajay Devgan), and has Sameer swear that he will leave India.

  • At a screening of Raja Hindustani (1996), Aishwarya Rai came up to Sanjay Leela Bhansali, shook his hand and told him that she loved his work in Khamoshi: The Musical (1996). Sanjay Leela Bhansali has said that her eyes were like fire, and he had been looking for a girl to play Nandini. At that moment he said to himself, "Yehi to hai meri Nandini (She is my Nandini)."
  • In the wedding scene, Sameer says that Aishwarya Rai's chracter, Nandini, acts as if she is Miss World. Aishwarya Rai, actually was Miss World in 1994.
  • After Khamoshi: The Musical, Bhansali was looking for a new film concept. Around this time, a Gujarat fan of his named Pratap Karwat began to pester him on the phone, claiming he had an interesting story for him. Bhansali kept fobbing him off until the man flew into a rage and forced him to listen to his story on the phone - and Bhansali loved it enough to want to meet him the next day.
  • In Aishwarya Rai's first scene, she is seen walking across the Kutch desert. She did this barefoot and in 35 degree weather. Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali later expressed his great gratitude and respect for her having done so.
