Movie Goof (errors made by characters, possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): In history class, when Jon Cryer's character is arguing with the teacher about Richard Nixon, he says that "he rigged a presidential election". Nixon won 49 states in the 1972 election. While he was guilty of many things in the aftermath of the Watergate scandal, he was never even accused of "rigging the election".
Roy Orbison was asked to record a duet with 'KD lang' for this movie of his hit song "Crying".
Filmed in Wilmington, North Carolina using the school name of Topsail High School. There is a real Topsail High School near Wilmington and most of the props for the school were taken from there.
Aunt Lucy is actually Jon Cryer's mother Gretchen.
