Heartburn

Movie (1986)

Rachel is a food writer at a New York magazine who meets Washington columnist Mark at a wedding and ends up falling in love with him despite her reservations about marriage. They buy a house, have a daughter, and Rachel thinks they are living happily ever after until she discovers that Mark is having an affair while she is waddling around with a second pregnancy.

Jack Nicholson's performance of "Soliloquy" ("My Boy Bill") from Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Carousel" is a nod to writer Nora Ephron's parents, Henry Ephron and Phoebe Ephron, who wrote the screenplay for the 1956 film version of the musical; Henry Ephron also produced Carousel.
Mandy Patinkin was originally cast as Mark Forman.
The film doesn't make this explicit, but Rachel's real-life counterpart was so upset by Mark's infidelity that she went into labor prematurely.
Features the film debut of Kevin Spacey as the subway passenger who robs Meryl Streep's therapy group.
