  • SPOILER: The symbol of the eagle would appear to identify Hancock as the Greek god Zeus. This would make the character of Mary Embrey Zeus' wife Hera. According to Greek mythology, Zeus and Hera were not only husband and wife, but also brother and sister; something alluded to, briefly, in the movie. The symbol was also chosen because Will Smith is from Philadelphia, home of the NFL team, the Philadelphia Eagles. One problem with the theory that Hancock is Zeus, however, is that Mary claims that she is stronger than he is. According to the Iliad, Zeus is stronger than all the other gods of Olympus combined. He tells them that he could dangle them all from the heights of Olympus on a rope held in one of his hands, but none of them could do the same to just him.
  • Like the TV series Arrested Development, Jason Bateman plays a man who becomes romantically involved with Charlize Theron's character (who isn't who he thinks she is), after his wife dies, leaving him with a son. Many scenes are set inside a prison. A key character loses a hand and replaces it with a hook device, and there are various references to incest.
  • Movie Goof (errors in geography): Ray holds a cup from Dunkin' Donuts. The film takes place in Los Angeles. There are no Dunkin' Donuts in the Los Angeles, California area.
  • Charlize Theron and Jason Bateman play a couple in this movie. They previously acted as a couple in season three of Arrested Development.
