Michael Caine is Jack Carter, a small-time hood working in London. When word reaches him of his brothers death, he travels to Newcastle to attend the fulneral. Movie Goof (crew or equipment visible): Shadow of camera clearly visible after Carter slaps Margaret on the bridge.
The white Cadillac in the film was Michael Klinger's (producer) own car.
Movie Goof (audio/visual unsynchronized): Tightening of the screws on the coffin.
Mike Hodges had 'Ian Hendry' in mind for the part of Jack Carter. According to Hodges, Hendry never forgave Caine for usurping him in the role and this caused resentment between the two stars on the set, resulting in the undisguised friction seen on the screen.
