When Sarah Marshall dumps aspiring musician Peter Bretter for rock star Aldous Snow, Peter's world comes crashing down. His best friend suggests that Peter should get away from everything and to fly off to Hawaii to escape all his problems. After arriving in Hawaii and meeting the beautiful Rachel Jansen, Peter is shocked to see not only Aldous Snow in Hawaii, but also Sarah Marshall.

Movie Trivia/Goofs

Based upon script-writer Jason Segel's experience of dealing with his break-up from Linda Cardellini, as well as three other breakups (with unspecified women) besides Cardellini. Segal has stated that the 'naked breakup' did not involve Cardellini.
Movie Goof (continuity error): In the morning restaurant scene where the waiter brings his pineapple/rum drink and an extra rum mini (Malibu rum) the level in the glass goes from about 2/3 to about 1/3 before he picks it up to drink it.
In at least two scenes in the film, a poster for the San Diego-based band The Rugburns can be seen hanging on the wall behind Peter when he is playing his piano. The Rugburns and their lead singer/songwriter Steve Poltz are known for their humorous and self-deprecating songs, much like the song Peter sings upon returning from Hawaii about needing to see a psychiatrist.
Movie Goof (continuity error): When Peter first meets Sarah and Aldous in the hotel lobby in Hawaii, Aldous approaches Sarah from behind and swats her butt with his open right hand. In the next shot he is holding his single flip-flop sandal in that same hand.
