Coffy is a nurse whose younger sister gets involved in drugs and is severely injured by contaminated heroin. Coffy sets out on a mission of vengeance and vigilante justice, killing drug dealers, pimps, and mobsters who cross her path.

American International Pictures lost the chance to make Cleopatra Jones and made this film instead, which ended up grossing more money in spite of a smaller budget.
Movie Goof (continuity error): When King George is placing drugs into a fake film cartridge, his shoulder holster in on the right; in the next scene, when he's placing his stash away, the holster magically switches to his left.
The idea to hide various weapons in Coffy's afro came from Pam Grier.
Movie Goof (continuity error): Vetroni's death: Coffy shoots Vetroni full in the chest with a shotgun, while he is standing in a swimming pool with his heart at the waterline. Vetroni is facing the camera and we see the blast, but there's no blood.
