Jane is a night club singer, out of work. Robin is a quirky real estate agent looking for a ride-share to accompany her to California. Her advertisement is answered by Jane, who at first was uncertain about her. A stop in Pittsburgh picks up a third, Holly, escaping a violent and drug-dealing partner.

Movie Trivia/Goofs

Movie Goof (continuity error): Just before the diner scene with Holly and Robin, there is an outside shot of the van driving and Holly is clearly seen in the back seat. In the very next shot, from inside the van, Holly is driving.
Movie Goof (errors made by characters, possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): When Robin is trying to inform Holly that her boyfriend is dead she writes "MORTE" on the window and tells it is French for dead. French for dead is "mort". Nevertheless, "Morte" means "Death" in Italian.
As the part of Holly hadn't been cast, Whoopi Goldberg suggested her close personal friend, Drew Barrymore. The two have been friends since Barrymore visited the set of The Color Purple in 1985.
Movie Goof (continuity error): When the doctor is talking to Jane after Robin is rushed to the hospital, she says that Robin is "going to the eighth floor". But exterior shots of the same hospital throughout the film show that it is only about four stories high.
