Bob Roberts

Movie (1992)

Mock documentary about an upstart candidate for the U.S. Senate written and directed by actor Tim Robbins. Bob Roberts is a folksinger with a difference: He offers tunes that protest welfare chiselers, liberal whining, and the like. As the filmmakers follow his campaign, Robbins gives needle-sharp insight into the way candidates manipulate the media.

  • The scene in which Bob Roberts meets the wife and children of the local Mayor is a pastiche on Bob Dylan's Dont Look Back (1967) where Bob meets the wife and children of the local sheriff.
  • Tim Robbins touted this project around the various studios for six years. Ironically, for a film about the American political process, it was the English production company Working Title who came up with the necessary funds.
  • Writer/Director/Actor Tim Robbins wrote a song called "Revape Amerika" for Tapeheads. It was performed by Robbins, credited as "Bob Roberts". Robbins reworked the song into "Retake America", used in this film.
  • When Tim Robbins directed his first feature film, Bob Roberts, Helen Hunt appeared in it in a brief cameo as a television news reporter. When Hunt made her feature directorial debut with Then She Found Me, Robbins returned the favor and appeared briefly as one of the interviewees on the Bette Midler character's talk show.
