- Movie Goof (continuity error): SPOILER: After Bragg has been pardoned by the President, he meets Virgil, Alison and Everett at their dinner table. When Bragg moves across the room to visit the town elders, the camera comes back to Virgil and Alison. There is no sign that Everett was ever there at the table as his dishes, wine glass and all have disappeared.
- Ed Harris originally intended his character to have hair. He selected a wig and screen tested it before eventually deciding to play the part bald.
- Diane Lane was originally cast as Allison French but left the project during pre-production.
- Movie Goof (continuity error): When Virgil and Everett first approach Bragg's men in the saloon, the cowboys are relieving themselves at the bar using what was called a "Piss Trough." Virgil demands that they "Button Up." After the shooting is over, when the bodies are shown on the floor, there is no trough or any sign of wetness in that area.
