  • Laurence Fishburne's character, Mr Larabee, is based on director Doug Atchison's teacher, Mr. Larabell.
  • The quote that Dr. Larabee has Akeelah read from a plaque on his wall is an excerpt from "A Return To Love: Reflections on the Principles of a Course in Miracles" by Marianne Williamson.
  • Movie Goof (factual errors): SPOILER: Near the end of the National Spelling Bee, they incorrectly announce that the final two contestants had never exhausted the list of Championship Round words, resulting in co-champions. In fact, this occurred in 1950 and 1962. In 1957, co-champions were declared when it was determined that Sandra Owen had been wrongly eliminated despite giving an acceptable alternate spelling of her final word.
  • Movie Goof (factual errors): On Akeelah's spelling test with a grade of 100%, word 3 is spelled "bacause".
