Vampire fans (and HBO fans) have been anticipating this new show from Alan Ball (Six Feet Under).

Here's the premise:

Based on the popular 'Southern Vampire,' book series by Charlaine Harris, "True Blood" follows the adventures of a small-town cocktail waitress Sookie Stackhouse (who all her life was an outsider due to her gift/curse of being a telepath) and how her life is turned upside down when a member of the undead walks into her life one fateful night.

I just finished watching the preair and I think this needs more editing / reworking (and I'm not talking about missing scenes). I thought the length of time they stayed in scenes made the acting look bad... I understand that they need to accommodate for Suki to hear people's thoughts, but they don't need to hit the audience over the head with this stuff... I found that some of the scenes with Tara (Suki's best friend) were so over-the-top, it felt like I was watching a sitcom. She acts stereotypical, then turns around and blames people for stereotyping her...

Favorite part: The opening theme song
Favorite characters so far: "Gran" Stackhouse and Lafayette (though his character is a stereotype as well).

Stephen Moyer as Bill the vampire made no impact at all on me...

Anna Paquin was annoying (too upbeat and spunky) as Suki, but that's the way her character is supposed to be (I guess - I haven't read the books).

I expect her to get more interesting, but I won't be anxiously awaiting the actual season premiere...

It needs a little work but the plot is very interesting. If they tune this, sounds like it could be a hit.

I thought it looked interresting too. Alittle off but it needs time to get the kinks out and i am willing to let them work it out! So here's to another show!!

Been seeing commercials..if you can call them commercials...on HBO for the drink TruBlood...They actually made my hubby look up and wonder what it was all about. Need to go look around abit when I have some free time(finals week this week)..and see if they are actually making a drink..like they did for the on Ben Stiller movie.

@zandar...i think they will have to do quite a bit of tweaking if they want to make a go of this one...but, as the pre-air was just a rough-cut, i am hoping that as more episodes appear, the characters acting improves.
(i heard that in the book this was based on, the pilot is up to chapter3, and it followed the book pretty closely ...)

I am currently waiting for the books I ordered, which they are baseing this show on. So maybe I'll be able to read the first book before the show airs. From what I saw of the pre-air the really need to work on the fangs. They looked more cheesy than any other Vampire movie or show I have seen.

They are hard to find. I found the earliest ones as combination books on (www.sfbc.com). It is a good book club, but not for everyone. Sorry if it looks like an advertisement, but they do have the best Sci-fi books. I do hope the series does the author proud. After hollywood butchered Anne Rice's work on the big screen I do not hold much hope for most of the like.

I just watched the pre-air - here I was thinking I was on the cutting edge - NOT!!! You guys have been up on this 3 mos ago!! I was not impressed with the ending and sorry but that Suki chick is irritating!! I will conform to my standard rule of 3 episodes before I sh*t pile it, but so far it's not promising at least the vampire was hot!!

Just watched True Blood special on HBO with Alan Ball the creator, it was a bout 15 minutes long and packed full of interesting information on the show. Seems there may have been some character changes since we saw the pre air. Over all looks neat and had a lot of drama, romance and danger.

A couple of the characters have reportedly changed from the pilot's original cast as well as a few scene rewrites but the core cast remains the same.

Be sure to watch the mocumentary on HBO's true Blood website as well as read the comic.

The second episode is out on P2P, it's not a scene release so I can't comment on quality but if you can't wait until next week it is out there now.

I though the first episode was intriguing, I'll give it a couple more shots.

This show is simply superb, I grabbed the E02 PRE-AiR leak because I needed another fix, although I should warn that the original leaked copy was interlaced to hell but there are fixed versions out there now or you could just wait until sunday.

The characters in this show are easily some of the most compeling that Alan Ball has ever written for, and that is saying something (he wrote the screenplay for American Beauty as well as Six Feet Under) and the whole thing is cooked with this perfect mix of raunchyness, wit & fear. My favourite new show so far.

Here is my issue...I waited for so dang long for it to actually play and still have yet to watch it!!! Finals are going on and I am so busy with work and projects for school..my only quiet time is 45minutes before I leave for work.

Ok got to watch it. I do not like the new Tara..Here blunt rudeness and conclusion jumping into peoples faces is not as real for me as it was for the other..she just fit there...This new one seems to have to force herself to be this way.

Watched the second episode tonight. It is getting better. I've been reading the first book and they keep pretty close, but there are differences here and there. But the spirit of the story seems intact.

I thought the second episode was okay. I'm interested in where this is going. We are still learning what vampires can do on this show.

It was a better ending than the first episode. And if they keep it close to the books there will be some surprises soon. And some twists at the end.

From the previous episodes and the preview of the next episode it looks like they are straying away from the books a bit. It remains to be seen if that is gonna be a good thing or a bad thing. If they had just gone by the book each episode would be a chapter, then they would not have had to hire writers, and they would have 12 episodes for the first season.

Show has already been picked up for a second season, and personally I think it's a good thing that they deviate from the books since Alan Ball is a FAR better writer than Charlaine Harris.

I noticed that he is listed as Executive Producer and Writer on most of them. So is he a producer or a witer. Maybve a producer that also wants writing credits because he over sees the scripts?

You have to agree that it takes a special talent to come up with an original idea and get it published as a novel and the same for follow up works in the same series of books or new works.

Problem with deviating from the books is that many times the TV writers deviate so much that the story line the original author invisioned gets lost completely.

He wrote the screenplay for American Beauty and wrote about 30f al episodes of six feet under, he's mainly a screenplay writer who demands control but since pretty much everything he gets involved in these days seems to make megabucks no-one cares that he's a control freak.

But I am not sure I agree with uncertaingods comments saying that Alan Ball is a better writer that Charlaine Harris. Although I do have to admit Alan Ball is good with screen plays for TV shows.

The books are like that, and they are not straying to far away from them. Although they have made the characters a little over the top for the show, and have introduced one character before time to add to drama. Now I am starting to believe it would be heathy for the show to stray from the books a little here and there to help with plot-lines, and entertainment value.

If any of you have watched Generation Kill - Eric is the Iceman....Totally weird to see the actor go from being a marine in the US marine corps to a vampire with long hair. I like him better as a marine - so far that is.....

From the books Eric was a Viking in life. I think they did a good job casting him. Though they make the vampires a lot more agressive than in the books. The show seems to be shaping up pretty good. They seem to have made Sam a lot weirder than in the books also.

Well I didn't see that coming...thats how to end a show,making sure the viewer comes back for more,and I will.

I saw it coming, but then again I have read the books already. And it seems they are keeping pretty close to the books. Though they have intensified the characters attitudes a lot. They seem more aggressive, and a little on the crazy side.

It was a superb ending in my book.

Once again they stay with the book, which is good. Though there is a lot in the show that was not in the books. Anyway they are doing a good job with the show. Except that Tara in the books does not have as big a part and is not as mean spirited. And in the books she is not infatuated with Jason.

Isn't the actor who portrays "Eric" (Iceman in Generation Kill) a Swedish actor? I think I read that somewhere. I just love it when accents are disguised.

The sixth episode is the best so far. And next week looks real good.

It does keep getting better & better every week & I enjoyed the excellent & funny cemetery scene.

I hope it does not get cancelled..right..there hasn't been a good one for some time. This is HBO...they love to get us hooked on a show then drop us...So I wouldn't be too terribly surprised.

The show got picked up for a second season after it's second episode, this thing is expected to run for at least four seasons.

This weeks episode was good, Sookie is one hot fangbanger.

opening theme is great, love the song and it's really well put together.

and the show is great, keep following it with eager.

We should start a list of all the things that make vampires sexy or somewhat intoxicating......I can see Eric is going to rev up Sookies loins in the near future, he's hot and Bill will be boring for her at some point. It must be the potential danger of being turned into a vamp all hot and bothered like that you could lose yourself in the moment and get drained quickly.

I was wondering though, if you never die - doesn't that get rather expensive? How the heck can you support yourself, eventually you'd run out of inheritance money and none of your family would be alive unless they are involved in some organizational crime??

Usually vampires have a lot of money... and if you could live forever making money should not be a problem... especially if you kill people for a living, you kill them, and then take all their stuff, plus you would start buying propierties and with the years you live out of rent or something like that...

Good episode again with plenty of loose-ends to be resolved next week regarding Tara,Jason & the cliffhanger...

That is just one of the lore about the werewolf phenomenon odo, it's all the same fucking thing.

there is either 2 dogs (and sam just happens to turn in the exact same breed that the original dog or can choose what dog to turn into) or is some sort of coincidence that sams appear naked and confused in the place where de dog was and now its not...

Remember when tara said he barks in his sleep? Now that makes a bit more sense. This show gives subtle clues to many things. It is excellent so far.

I have read the books. They are good. And there are quiet a few differences. The books are centered completely around Sukie. The Show is more centered around the Vampires.

so now there are werewolf, shapeshifters, fake demons and some thing we rather not know about?...

got to say, the vampire court was an interesting thing...

too bad jayson's girl kill the vampire... it thought that at the end jayson might got turned...

In the books there are real Demons, but they are half-demons or less, and they are related to fairies and elves. Or something like that.

Also in the books Eric kills Longshadow, not Bill. And Eric only has to pay a blood debt to Longshadow's Sire.

The differences are adding up, but that just makes it more interesting.

plus if the killer was that guy, it aparently kills people related to vampires, jason told the guys that the GIRL was doing V-Juice, but he didnt said anything about himself, plus he always said how much he hated vampires... (unleas up until he new the vamp he and the girl kidnaped...

First it seemed to be people having "relations" with vampires, then when grandma was killed it seemed people known to be friendly with vampires, now it does seem to be anyone doing anything with vampires... which puts a few others at risk if true.

I have been into it since the firs episode.
Shaky beginning, but now i think that it is getting the flow.
The theme song is wonderful.

I love this show so much, any know if there is a second season.

As for the comments on Sookie can be such a self-righteous bitch, I have to disagree, if you could read minds or have to listen to every thought other people have, there is no way you would have a normal personality. If they had scripted Sookie as a well adjusted young women, I think that would have made the show boring and lame.

Again Bigrich makes a valid point. I would not be surprised if they kept this series going for six or seven seasons, but that is just my opinion.

In the books they don't have a lot of sex scenes, but there are a few. But of course the books revolved mostly around Sukie. Also, new actresses seem more willing to do racier roles now a day.

That ending SUCKED!!! At least with other shows like Dexter there was a wrap up but this one left you hanging I hate it when that happens!! How many months before the next season? I sure hope they don't get rid of Lafatte, he's one of the best characters on the show!

Not a TV show/series but I found that Twilight was pretty good.
Both the books it was based on and the movie.

i came to say the same thing... im listening to the twilight audio books... (Reading just puts me to sleep.. :P)

@dorian, i'g originally dl this for my 10yr old she loves vampire shows, but agter the first 10 mins i knew she wasn't going to be allowed to watch them , I have to make sure none of the kids are around when i watch them lol

True Blood is definately not for kids and depending on what you let your children watch, some of you parents may not approve of the content even for a teenager....but then again, that's what makes it so good :))) I'm glad I'm all grown up!

There will be a second season(12 episodes).Hey,with seven novels in the series maybe this will be around a few seasons.Seen some spoilers and if they are correct season two will be better than the first.Check out their official site and the fan sites if your jonesing for some "True Blood".

Hi everyone! I will not post any spoilers or cliffhangers. Alan Ball does a great job on this show creating a cliffhanger at the end of each episode that you just can't wait till the next episode.

I love the Sookie books , but True Blood just left me cold. The characters are nothing like I imagined they would be and Sookie is too annoying. I do like Stephen Moyer as Bill , but I think they cast every other character wrong, Like Tara I like her in the book but I can't stand her in True Blood. Disappointed !!!!

maybe i'll read the books then, sometimes the body of the show left me cold but the ending made me want to watch the next one. But the dexter books weren't as good as the tv show IMHO

In the books it was Lafiate dead in the back of Andy's car.
And also he did not sell V in the books. In fact he has a bigger role in the show than he did in the books. And Jason never became a holy roller that they seem to be turning him into.

Great season opening.They have given it a lot of spins and twists.
Was shocked to see the dilemma that Lafayette has gotten into.Sam and the witch,who would have known? Think Jason's enlightenment will be short lived. The cliffhanger was awesome.

I think the vamps would view turning Lafayette as a reward,but they wanted to subject him to prolonged punishment, so they fed off him & tortured him.

Well at least Lafayette is still alive. In the book he was the body in Andy Bellflour's car, but it seems he is going to have a bigger role in the series than he had in the books. I really liked the ending this week.

maryann also likes to sacrifice those she can't control (supernaturals) so we'll see....

Not to cause controversy, but does anyone else feel like the southern accents are a bit much? I have a tendency to make such odd yet simple prejudgments about shows, and yes it is unique in style but unless you were raised in the south I would find the accents just a tad distracting...I find that I can even watch British shows/films and not get as distracted. Rumors also had said that True Blood was one of the reasons for Moonlight getting canceled... So I suppose there is more motive behind my madness than I would like to admit.

Moonlight has less than zero to do with True Blood, except that it could in no way compete with a better product. The accent's are central to the feel of the show and are pulled off surprisingly well.

I haven't read the books and therefore don't know what role godric played in them but I think they have totally underused his character. He could have had a more central role. I was dissapointed to see him go.

The whole Maryann thing is starting to become a little drawn out. Can't wait for it to come to a conclusion.

@UCG thanks for the link,I think band of skulls has a style of music more suited to the US market rather than mainstream UK which should see them do very well over there (if they haven't already).

They have taken off very well in America and their album will finally be coming to our shores next month but is already getting some serious airplay by radio 1 & 2.

This weeks episode was superb, Andy & Jason are comedy gold.

Another good episode this week, at least a shorter 2nd series has meant they have not compromised on quality.
