stargate universe will be set on a ship that was part of an ancient experiment to seed the galaxies with stargates millons of years ago but that was prematurely ended by the ancients ascension .After placing stargates throughout multiple galaxies a second ship would follow up and explore.The basis of stargate universe is the ninth and final chevron,which previously unknown would serve to get to the first ship.

Didnt Star Trek do the same type thing with Star Trek: Voyager?
Moderator

> 1 year ago
@brilman

Not really.

Voyager was moved way out of the alpha quadrant by a super being.
The core storyline was trying to get home not actual exploration although some did occur on the way. In the first/second episode I think they thought the journey would take 80 years. But you really need to watch it to find out what happened.

That sounds good, but who will be on Universe? Amanda Tapping is on Sancuary now. Tilc will probably go back to his people. Daniel as far as Odo says is going to Atlantis. So that just leaves Vala Maldarain and what's his name who took over SG1 for Jack. Then it would be alot like Farscape.

It's official, Stargate Universe will begin producion early 2009 and is planned to air with a two hour movie in summer 2009. I can't wait. I wonder if any of the atlantis team will move to the show. Proving that you can't keep a good franchise down -- at least not for more than a day or so -- the SCI FI Channel has green-lit production on Stargate Universe, the third live-action television series, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The official press release from MGM and SCI FI is expected later today.

Universe will have a 2-hour premiere in 2009, and land in a regular time slot next summer -- meaning there will not be a production gap between the second and third Stargate television series.

Brad Wright and Robert Cooper, co-creators of Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis, will serve as executive producers and writers on the new show. (Atlantis ends its five seasons next year but will continue in a two-hour telefilm.)

"SCI FI has enjoyed tremendous success with Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis, and we're proud to be the home of the new Stargate Universe," Mark Stern, executive vice president, original programming for SCI FI, said in a statement. "Universe will continue the Stargate legacy of vibrant storylines and compelling adventures, but will re-invent the format in a whole new way."

After unlocking the mystery of the Stargate's ninth chevron, a team of explorers travels to an unmanned starship called the Destiny, launched by the Ancients at the height of their civilization as a grand experiment set in motion but never completed.

What starts as a simple reconnaissance turns into a never-ending mission as the Stargate Universe crew discovers that the ship is unable to return to Earth and that they must now fend for themselves aboard the Destiny.

The crew will travel to the far reaches of the universe, connecting with each of the previously launched Stargates, thus fulfilling the Destiny's original mission.

Stargate Universe will debut as a two-hour movie event on SCI FI. Following its premiere, Universe will assume a regular hourly slot in the summer of 2009.

SPOILER SPOILER

Here are some details on the characters the show has begun casting for.

Colonel Everett Young
40's handsome, capable, former SG team leader. Like the Jack O'Neill of ten years ago, but Young's edges have tended to sharpen over time. He requested permission to serve the remainder of his commission on Earth upon marrying his wife, Hailey, two years ago, but for now he's temporary commander of a secret off world base. The loss of two members of his team several years ago has taught him never to take anything for granted, and be prepared for anything. He stays on top of his team so they stay alive. STAR NAMES ONLY. SERIES REGULAR;

Tamara Jon
20-25, all ethnicities (Asian Preferably). SGC Field medic, Captain grade. Off world experience. Beautiful, tough, smart, capable. Paramedic level training. Able to triage serious injury. Modest background. Dreamed of being a doctor but couldn't afford medical school and the Air Force was her best option. She ends up being the most medically inclined person on the ship but is overwhelmed by the lack of knowledge and experience treating seriously wounded and ill patients. She also lacks the medicine and supplies and has to make do. SERIES REGULAR;

Chloe Carpenter
20ish. Stunning and sexy. Daughter of a U.S. Senator. Silver spoon upbringing and a little spoiled but not stupid either. Politically and socially savvy. Dreams of following in her father's footsteps but for now she's a bit of a party girl in her first year at an Ivy League school. Her father's tragic death and the dire circumstances of being trapped on a spaceship seriously tests her character. SERIES REGULAR;

Eli Hitchcock
20-25. Total slacker. Utter genius. Mathematics, computers, anything he puts his mind to. Acerbic sense of humor. A social outcast. Comes from a broken home. Lacks confidence because his true intelligence has never really been recognized like Matt Damon's character from Good Will Hunting with a little Jack Black thrown in sptv050769. SERIES REGULAR;

Lt. Jared Nash
20-25. Junior S.G.C. team member. Officer material but green and rough around the edges. Every teenage girl's fantasy. Like a college quarterback thrown into his first pro game, he is thrust into the role of leader well before he's ready for the responsibility and must learn to take command, earn respect through action, and manage the diverse personalities on the ship to keep everyone alive. Like Jason Bourne, he is skilled and well-trained however he is mentally unprepared for the urgency of the situation. SERIES REGULAR;

Ron "Psycho" Stasiak
20, all ethnicities. Marine. Big, strong, silent. You want him on your side. You don't want him mad at you. Lacks control over his temper in non combat situations. His past is a mystery but it's clear something dark formed the hard shell around him. Yet, there must also be some moral center because otherwise he'd kill everyone around him. Think Eric Bana's character "Hoot" in Blackhawk Down. SERIES REGULAR.

As posted on gateworld.net, details may be subject to change.

I thhink this is going to be the best stargate series yet.

Robert Carlyle has been cast in Stargate Universe as Dr Davis Rush.

Below is a part of the official press release:

Edgier and younger in tone than the two previous series, SGU follows a band of soldiers, scientists and civilians, who must fend for themselves as they are forced through a Stargate when their hidden base comes under attack. The desperate survivors emerge aboard an ancient ship missing in the far reaches of space. As they fight to survive, Dr. Rush (Carlyle) works to unlock the mysteries of the ship and return the group home, but evidence of his ulterior motives soon arises.

Doctor Whos Russell T Davies has taken a pop at Stargate in a recent interview on BBC radio. He expressed his suprise at Robert Carlyle (who was rumored to be in the running to become the new doctor) signing up for Universe, he said the following:

"Stargate, can you believe it?" Davies said. "That was a surprise. Has his agent watched it?"

I must say I was suprised by his comment.

**********SPOILER**********

Stargate Universe Casting News

David Blue has been cast as Eli Wallace.

Formerly named Eli Hitchcock, the character is described as “a total slacker who just happens to be an utter genius with anything he puts his mind to — mathematics, computers, video games. A lack confidence has left him with an acerbic sense of humour.”

Born on Long Island, New York, 30-year-old Blue studied at the University of Central Florida. In addition to his acting talents, he is also skilled in tap, jazz, hip-hop, ballet, and is a champion swing dancer. The actor has appeared in seven episodes of Ugly Betty, according to IMDB, playing Cliff St. Paul. He has also appeared on Moonlight, Scrubs, and Veronica Mars.

Justin Louis has been cast as Colonel Everett Young.

The senior military officer on board the Destiny, Colonel Young is “an experienced and married Stargate team leader,” according to TV Guide. Early casting documents described the character as a former SG team leader who is the temporary commander of a secret, off-world base. He has been married just two years to his wife, Hailey.

Veteran actor Justin Louis is 41, born in Portugal and raised in Ontario, Canada. He has appeared on a broad range of TV series and films, including Durham County, 24, CSI: Miami, and 1-800-Missing. Science fiction fans may have caught him in guest appearances on The Outer Limit (appearing with Firefly’s Nathan Fillion in the episode “Star Crossed”), Mutant X, Highlander, and as the holodeck character Trevis on Star Trek: Voyager. He also appeared in the recent miniseries The Andromeda Strain.

Jamil Walker Smith has been cast as Sr. Sergeant Ronald Greer.

Sergeant Greer was named Ron “Psycho” Stasiak in early casting documents, and is the fourth main character renamed so far. His character is described as “a Marine with an explosive temper and a mysterious past to account for it.”

Jamil Walker Smith, 26, hails from New York City, and is best known as the voice of Gerald on the Nickelodeon series Hey Arnold! On screen he has appeared in such series as Bones, Cold Case, NYPD Blue, and Supernatural.

Brian J Smith has been cast as Lt. Matthew Scott (formerly Jared Nash).

The studio and network describe Scott as “a junior member of the Stargate team. Green and rough around the edges, he is thrust into the role of leader well before he’s ready for the responsibility and must learn to command, earn respect through action, and manage the diverse personalities aboard the ship.”

A native of Allen, Texas, 27-year-old Smith studied theatre in Plano, Texas, and at The Juilliard School Drama Division in New York City. He has appeared in the independent films Hate Crime, Red Hook, and 2009’s The War Boys, and on Broadway in the play Come Back, Little Sheba. According to IMDb, this is his first television role.

Also announced is a name change for Carlyle’s character, now Dr. Nicholas Rush (formerly David Rush).

Stargate Universe will begin principal photography on February 4 in Vancouver, British Columbia and will premier this fall.

Character details are, of course, subject to change as the show moves toward its February 4 start of filming and fall 2009 premiere.

Huffman, meanwhile, will play Tamara Johansen, a strong-willed — if inexperienced — field medic who will need to rise to the occasion to treat the seriously wounded.

Phillips and Huffman join previously announced cast members Robert Carlyle, Justin Louis, David Blue, Jamil Walker Smith and Brian J. Smith.

Ming-Na will play Camille Wray, an HR bigwig and the highest-ranking survivor. Levesque, meanwhile, stars as Chloe Armstrong, the wild and immature daughter of a U.S. Senator.

I'm very excited about this! (...as is obviously everyone else here...) I also like the change in the type of plot. It will be much more ship based than the last stargate series but still have the set-up and style of a stargate show. Kind of like a stargate with a writer from star trek thrown in the mix... which is nice since there isn't currently any new star trek shows.

Faced with meeting the most basic needs of food, water and air, the group must unlock the secrets of the ship's stargate to survive. The danger, adventure and hope they find on board Destiny will reveal the heroes and villains among them.

Stargate Universe will debut as a two-hour movie event on SCI FI and will be distributed by MGM Worldwide Television Distribution. Brad Wright and Robert Cooper, of Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis, will serve as executive producers and writers on the new series.

Stargate Universe creator Robert C. Cooper has told fansite Gateworld that the new series' visual style has been influenced by Joss Whedon's short-lived space western Firefly, the basis for the movie Serenity.

Cooper explained that the producers wanted to make the new entrant to the Stargate franchise feel fresh, so they decided to "shoot this a little bit like a documentary crew would shoot a ride-along to a space ship out in the universe,that maybe we could get audiences to embrace the science fiction elements and the characters in a realistic way if we shot the show using the 'language' of documentary and reality."

Cooper noted that on Firefly there was "a lot of handheld stuff. Cameras were placed in places that were non-traditional or typical of filmmaking" and this was a style they would "love to try to approach."

SCI FI Channel announced the casting of Lou Diamond Phillips, Ming-Na, Elyse Levesque and Alaina Huffman in its new original series Stargate Universe, which began production last week in Vancouver, Canada.

They join the previously announced stars Robert Carlyle, Justin Louis, David Blue, Jamil Walker Smith and Brian J. Smith in the latest adventure of the Stargate franchise produced by MGM Television, which is expected to premiere with a two-hour movie in October.

The two-part premiere of SGU is being directed by Andy Mikita (Stargate Atlantis, Stargate SG-1) and shot by Rohn Schmidt (The Shield, The Mist). Brad Wright and Robert Cooper (Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis) will serve as executive producers and writers on the new series.

Here's how SCI FI describes the new show: "SGU follows a band of soldiers, scientists and civilians who must fend for themselves as they are forced through a Stargate when their hidden base comes under attack. The desperate survivors emerge aboard an ancient ship, which is locked on an unknown course and unable to return to Earth. Faced with meeting the most basic needs of food, water and air, the group must unlock the secrets of the ship's Stargate to survive. The danger, adventure and hope they find on board the Destiny will reveal the heroes and villains among them."

Here's how SCI FI describes the cast:

Carlyle stars as Dr. Nicholas Rush, one of the most brilliant scientific minds, whose motives are not what they appear to be.

Phillips is Col. Telford, a proud lifelong military man, who puts his faith in the chain of command. Stubbornly confident, he's highly regarded by his superiors. He is the chosen leader of the ill-fated expedition.

Louis portrays Col. Everett Young, an experienced Stargate team leader. Married, with years of tough decisions under his belt, he has learned from life never to take anything for granted. He stays on top of his team so they stay alive.

Smith is Lt. Matthew Scott, a junior member of the Stargate team. Green and rough around the edges, he is thrust into the role of leader well before he's ready for the responsibility and must learn to command, earn respect through action and manage the diverse personalities aboard the ship.

Levesque stars as Chloe Armstrong, the daughter and aide of a U.S. senator. Politically savvy, but with a wild side, she is considering following in her father's footsteps until she finds herself trapped on the ship. As tensions rise, her character will be tested and her place among the group revealed.

Blue stars as Eli Wallace, a total slacker, who just happens to be an utter genius with anything he puts his mind to: mathematics, computers, video games. A lack of confidence has left him with an acerbic sense of humor.

Huffman portrays Master Sgt. Tamara Johansen. Unable to afford medical school, the strong-willed field medic saw the Air Force as the best option. Faced with the mounting pressure and a lack of in-depth experience, she will be forced to rise to the occasion as she treats the seriously wounded.

Smith portrays Master Sgt. Ronald Greer, a Marine with a temper you don't want to mess with. His past is mysterious, but it's clear something dark formed the hard shell around him.

Ming-Na is Camile Wray, a human resources executive with the international oversight committee that governs the Stargate program. Now the highest-ranking member of that division left stranded on the ship, she carries herself with a misguided sense of superiority over the other military and civilian survivors.

stargate universe first impressions {review by gateworld }

A few people have asked us for our full review of Stargate Universe, seeing as how the press kit arrived a few days ago (story). While we work on the complete review, we thought we should share some informal first impressions of the new series right away.

In no particular order:

IT’S DIFFERENT, YET FAMILIAR. Much has been made about how the show is going to be unlike what has come before it, and long-time Stargate viewers will certainly be struck by how different SGU is. The difference in shooting style, the focus on characters and relationships more than a driving plot, and a very different approach to music may stand out in particular. It’s not just the next Stargate show; it’s a different kind of Stargate show. It is done beautifully, and for us it is a welcome change.

There’s a ton that is familiar, though — and we don’t just mean the big, spinning ring. In spite of the differences it still feels like Stargate. Not least of all is the world that the characters inhabit. The faces, the technology, the set design, the subtly updated sound effects, the humor mixed with fantastical circumstances and emotion … it’s Stargate.

NO BAD GUYS, PER SE. We heard rumblings of this early on, and it seems to be working out nicely so far. There are enemies, to be sure, and the Destiny will encounter alien species. But the pilot doesn’t set up a primary antagonist like the Goa’uld or the Wraith. Instead, the show is about the Destiny crew and their struggle to survive, to learn what they are made of and who they can count on.

DAMN GOOD ACTING. There are a whopping nine cast members, and every one of them is very good at their craft. Everyone gets moments to shine, and after three episodes it feels like we know a bit about who they are and what makes them tick — and where they have personal flaws. There are a few stand-outs, but we are eager to see the spotlight shone on everyone in turn.

One of the very first feelings we got when watching “Air, Part 1″ was that these characters have history, and history with each other. Most of them aren’t meeting one another for the first time. They already feel “lived in;” we get to drop into the middle of their story and figure out what kind of people they are. That’s a credit to the writers (who are clearly writing for an audience that is smart, and doesn’t have to have every plot turn or relationship pointed out with banal dialogue), and it is a credit to the actors.

IT MAKES YOU THINK. Shoot-em-up action and plot-driven fun is great. But because many of the characters on SGU have a history with one another, you may miss something if you’re not watching closely. Our second pass through the pilot revealed over a half dozen clues to characters and potential future scenarios that we didn’t catch the first time around. Thus …

IT PLANTS SEEDS. A large portion of what is hinted at throughout the pilot does not come to fruition at the end of the three hours. The pilot shows a concerted effort to establish that this is going to be a marathon journey — one that will be rewarding to the viewer — than a solo sprint every week.

Our full review of “Air” will be online next week. Why wait so long? Press kits do go out weeks in advance, to give television writers ample time to watch and write. But there’s a reason why most of the mainstream media reviews you will see in the days ahead won’t be published until Friday, October 2: For viewers who aren’t sure if they’re going to watch, that final week and final day are the most critical for publicity.

We’ll have lots more to say about “Air” and Stargate Universe as we count down these final days to the show’s premiere, as well as after the rest of the world has seen it! To make sure that we don’t miss a beat, we have already recorded podcast discussions for the show’s launch week, for “Air” Parts 1 and 2, and for “Air, Part 3.”

Stay tuned for all that and more, and watch the premiere of SGU on October 2!

I never commented on Air parts 1&2 last week because I didn't know what to say. I wasn't sure if I liked it or not. I wanted to wait for Air part 3 before I formed an opinion.

As a pilot I think it fell a little short. The Atlantis pilot was much more exciting and seemed a little better put together. I was dissapointed we didn't get to see more of the Hammond in action.

I just watched Air part 3. It was a good episode. I really liked the last 15 minutes, really well done.

I realy don't like the fact that people on Destiny are able to contact earth. I would have preferred it if they had been completley cut off.

For those out there who say this show is a rip off of Galactica, this show is nothing like Battlestar Galactica. Yes it may be set on a ship and it may have some other similaraties but it is nothing like Galactica. I watched and enjoyed Galactica, they are two completley different shows and should not be compared to each other.

Overall verdict, wasn't sure to begin with but am begining to like it a little more. I hope it continues to draw me in.

Anyone else dissapointed that there are no opening titles?

Nah opening titles are not what makes a good show imo. They've done what I like 'till now with a good song at the ending.

And I'm not saying it is a ripoff of BSG, but one must admit there are alot of striking similarities. But what has not been done in a TV series!? One could probably compare this with many many shows out there, but for me BSG falls to mind at once.

I totaly agree, they should have been completley cut off. Would have made it mor exiting. But then again this could lead to many a conflict ;)

Seems this is more a character based show wich imo is way better than a pure action adventure. Even O'neil seems way mor serious from what we have seen. Usually he's a comic relief in late SG-1 and SG-A.

I my self was never that great a fan of SG-A, for me it was some same old same old. Missunderstand me right thoug, the first couple of seasons was great but it got more and more a repetition of what we'd seen as the seasons went on.

PS: THIS IS ALL IN MY OPINION.(some folks takes thing wqay to personal if one disagree with them) :D

As my favourite SF writer Isaac Asimov has proven there are only a finite number of basic SF plots.

which is why IMHPO the following applies

1. A good SF show has to rely on things other than the main story line. However the skill with which they weave that main plot will make or break a show.

2. Many otherwise good SF shows degenerate into soap type relationship shows because they cannot think of or do anything else, or are just plain taking the easy way out.

3. Number 2 can also be induced by the cost factor as soap type shows need less in the way of sets etc.,

I must seriously agree with you on point 2, creating a good story for a character is absolutly not an easy way out. It takes more creativety writing a good character background than just blasting away with phasers, lasers or what ever.
I would say all out space battle and/or energy weapon fights trough out 45 mins is the easy way out(that we have seen x number of times), that is something anyone can do.

Nevertheless they DO degenerate into soap opera style shows with basically the same old inter-personal relationship garbage as can be found in non science fiction shows.

I apologise for saying "taking the easy way out" please read as though that phrase is not there.

I bow to your experience in these matters although science fiction is NOT limited to "all out space battle and/or energy weapon fights" now is it?

EG

Most Star Trek episodes are not of this sort.
Nor Babylon 5, Nor Stargate, and these are just a few of the space orientated ones but science fiction does not have to mean space sagas.

I also think Kyle XY was sci-fi until it too degenerated into a teenage angst show. Which to my mind showed the lack of forethought of the plot and so they went to the old standy-by whether difficult to write or not.

Only one of the blast'em type comes readily to mind and that it is "Space Above and Beyond"

If they had Daniel use the stones he could translate all they needed to gain true control over the ship, even with it being an ancient dialect of Ancient which is exactly why they won't bring him into it. It's still in W5 mode; with inklings of who they are not.
My take so far:
Telford -iffy (can he deal with a reality outside a narrow military viewpoint?)
Everette -experienced well able to play the hand dealt
Rush -unstable (why?)
Eli -naive optimistic very bright (so far good under pressure)
LT Scott -very busy trying not to be who he thinks he is;
Chloe -a wild card (? needed to live up to "...we are not who we should be" line)
Master Sgt -military wild card? (depends on 'logic' for his 'behavioural problems')
Tamara -nothing in particular yet (tho has great potential for a backbone)
Most others still are 'scenary' (? like the expendable yeomen of StarTrek TOS except they look to be a finite resource so they can't really be expendable 'only 88 people were MIA from Earth's viewpoint')
Could be a slow build up to a rocket (I'm optimistic so this is where I'm betting) or a slow train wreck.

That would make minus three, and there were two maybe three bodies of military personnel that were killed on the base before the planet blew up. There could have been more, but they did not get into specifics with the extra personnel on the base.

although it is somewhat darker than the previous series I enjoy that part however it is pretty slow moving and predictable as of now I will continue to watch it for the next little while, I am not sold on the captain nor the scientist yet think one grandstands and over acts the part and the other (captain....)? is awfully weak there is no ying or yang no chemistry between them yet as a matter of fact there is no chemistry amongst any of the characters I hope this develops soon or I feel this stargate will be gone before it begans

they still didn't release a key episode in the story line. one episode, one story.. so they're keeping the faith that ratings will go up. guess new viewers must be needed for the show to take a significant step forward.

Star Trek Voyager all over again. Nothing original about this series so far...it seems doomed to the cutting room floor.

"Air Part 3" was the most watched stargate show since Atlantis "The Siege Part 1" back in March 2005, according to SyFy. SyFy also announced that despite slipping a little from the season high for "Air Part 3" Universe has helped give the channel it's best October ever.

This week was total unablated drivill in other words crap. Nothing to keep interest in a story line and nothing to call science fiction at all. More like a daytime soap than anything worth watching.

tryin' to like it - a bit confusing sometimes - do they come back to earth in some elses bodies or sumthin'??? I think I missed an episode.

@ici Yes they have alien stones with them on the ship. These allow them to transmitt in essence a personality back to earth to take over someones body who is manning a similar set of stones back on earth. This obviously is a way to get around the communications at the sol from the starship.

they didn't continued the story from 1x08 Time but it's oki. they are trying to develop some relationships between the chars. i didn't find the ep lamer then the others but it's not taking a space soap opera turn. they intended to forge the chars.. give them some features. and yes, they failed. there isn't one character that we can relate to or understand, therefore like or dislike.

Must admit it's getting chewier. BUT I'll continue to waste bandwith on it.

@shade yeah tou kinda get more distance from the chars. They're giving a bit to much info at a time and not in a digestable way.
