TV Forum
Having started a thread for Canadian TV about 8 months ago, I’d like to start a discussion of Australian TV.
To begin with, I am not from Australia nor do I have easy access to television from down under. But I am interested in English language television productions from outside the US. With FarScape as the exception, I haven’t looked at programs from Australia... at least until recently when Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries began to air.
Here is a list of a few Australian series that have been mentioned to me;
Division 4
Fallen Angels
Fireflies
Mirror, Mirror
Phoenix Five
Round The Twist
Stingers
Stormworld
Anyone wanting to add to this list? Or comment on any of the above?
I watched Round the twist when I was a kid, don't remember much about it now though.
On old favourate of mine is Prisoner, known in the uk as Prisoner Cell Block H. My mum used to let me stay up late at the weekend to watch re runs in the late 80's early 90's. The show was famous for its shaky sets but had some great drama and interesting characters.
It was announced last month that a re imagining of prisoner has been commissioned. The new show will be called Wentworth. The series will be set in presemt day but will include some of the original characters along with new ones. Prisoner for me is a true classic, maybe it should be left alone.
@thor
ive heard of talk about a new prisoner show coming soon it will be based before the last one and concentrate on the early life of bea smith one of the main charactors from the original series

LoL I remember Queen Bea, I think I liked and loathed 'Prisoner' in equal measure.
Yeah Queen B and Joan "The Freak" Ferguson were great characters.
I've watched several Aussie productions that I've particularly enjoyed. Not sure what kind of tv series interest you most, so I'll just list the ones I liked and you can look them up if you like.
You mention "Mirror, Mirror". I thoroughly enjoyed it! It's rather dated and hard to come by, but if you manage to get hold of it, you'll be taken back to your childhood. :) Talking of childhood, I saw the Berlin wall shortly after it had fallen (re: something you mention on your profile). This was in 1990 so I was only 3, but I do remember being overjoyed when my parents actually encouraged me to break pieces off. Permission to break something? Yipee! n_n *ahem* Anyway... Back to the topic at hand...
- H2O: Just Add Water (acting can be a bit irritating at first, but fun story none the less)
- Dance Academy (I enjoyed the first season)
- McLeod's Daughters (enjoyed the first 3 seasons)
- Ocean Girl (watched this as a kid)
- Farscape (ah you've already seen that one)
Also you can try doing a search for "(AU)" here on ShareTv, which should probably bring up quite a few titles. :)
I loved Sons and Daughters, Neighbours (don't watch it anymore though), Return to Eden, The Flying Doctors and Carson's Law. These are all the Australian shows I remember.
As an Aussie I rely on American TV to entertain me. And some English and Canadian shows. :)
The few Aussie shows I did like were
McLeods Daughters. Loved it.
Return to Eden, the mini series.
Sons and Daughters in its day
Prisoner in its day. They can try and bring this back but I bet it is a disaster. Some shows are success because of the time they are in. Prisoner was very innocent compared to todays standard prision stuff.
Mirror Mirror was good for an Aussie kids show. As was H2o. Most aussie kids shows are absolute rubbish. Over acted and just icky.
as they say they just don't make them like they use to
I'm mostly familiar with some great Australian teen series: Dance Academy, The Elephant Princess and H2O: Just Add Water.
I find it hard to believe that no-one has mentioned Wildside yet. One of the best shows from Aussie Tv - it was only shown on ABC (A = Australia) but a brilliant series in its day.
what about Skippy, my favourite as a child. And Prisoner cell block H used to be on late, we would come back from the pub and watch it. Good times lol
AU tv shows are usually quite exceptional, IMO. They do alot for what little budget they have, compared to like US tv shows. Same can be said for CA tv shows. I have to agree with several members on their likes: McCleod's Daughters, Farscape, H2O: Just Add Water but would like to add...
Sea Patrol (one of my all-time fav shows)
Rush
Tricky Business
Rescue: Special Ops
The Voice (although not exclusive but a great 1st season)
Bondi Rescue is a favourate of mine, great show! Worth checking out, all of the episodes can be found on youtube.
