I read in another thread that Carnivale was cancelled on a cliffhanger or without a satisfactory conclusion.
I was annoyed when the same happened to Space:Above & Beyond...Can you think of any more shows where this has happened?

@gedmen IMHO it was the network bean counters of course. It didn't build an wide audience immediately. In the 90's, that was a sin that couldn't be tolerated for any show.

@captsheridan Surface was a great show! Too bad this wasn't allowed to develop as the story line was unique and really getting interesting when it was chopped.

Anyone else notice that most of the shows listed are SciFi? I wonder if this is because they are more expensive to produce than a comedy? If so then the question becomes why are they allowed a season or two? Surely the networks have seen a budget before approvals are given.

Invasion - sort of a cliffhanger
Day Break - a lot left to explain
journeyman - a lot left to explain

All three tried to tie up somethings but left a lot to be answered to me.

newlinux

i think sci-fi shows have more going on plotwise than comedys. Comedy's don't necessarily have a lot of serial plot elements and thus often aren't in a state to have a cliffhanger.

Well It just goes to prove the TV executives are as dumb in the UK as they are in the USA.
They have canceled Primeval and left it with some very big questions unanswered.

@ iceman, Query, What was the cliffhanger on Farscape.

@everyone, I was thinking when you post the show name, please it would help me nyway, as just a member, if you could post a synopsis of what the cliffhanger was.

Thanks!

Dark Angel ended on a cliffhanger for me, when they just left Max and her gang standing there, ready to confront the biggest battle of the show, the fight for the rights of all the Mutants that sprang out of Manticore...and then we never got to see any more.

@thetrekhippy

They did have a cliffhanger at the end of season four, the two lead characters had been turned in to crystals.
But they finally ended the show properly when they went back and made The Peacekeeper Wars.

Firefly had a huge one, but they settled it with a movie, though still left some un-answered questions. Dead Like Me was sortta a cliffhanger. I mean, you never Learn Rube's secret and the movie didn't answer any of that.

And whoever said Babylon 5, it wasn't canceled.

well the cliffhanger for the maverick series was when james garner[main central character, bret maverick] quit the show..no mention of him ever occurred. instead jack kelly bret's brother took over interspered with temporary brothers beau and brent and later they too were dropped without notice. it served as a break they interspersed reruns of bret maverick's main shows. fans were baffled and a unrecorded number saw through the paint and
dropped the show from their viewing schedule. i stopped watching it because the scripts were lousy by comparison.

Why is it they dont cancel the bad shows but cancel the good ones :(

quark

Because they think the good ones are the bad ones (by viewing figures) and vice versa.

So your bad ones must be watched by a lot of viewers who would therefore disagree with you.

When Hart to Hart was cancelled it was still at least in the top 15 shows, but I believe the top 10. They couldn't possibly have thought that was a bad show based on the numbers but cancelled it anyway.

I agree, they cancel the good shows & leave us to be dumbed downed with the bad ones. They can't even come up with a new concept in shows, they keep reprising the old ones in one carnation or another...badly usually!!

@yankeefan

re Hart to Hart

They had probably run out of ideas. LOL

But probably more important was their ratings position.
For the last 4 years they were 23; 15: 17: 41 which says it all.

I cannot find anywhere where they are in the top 15 let alone 10.

When I was in high school I took a media course where we were to monitor the top 20 TV shows based on the Nielsen ratings listed in our local paper every week. I am not certain where you got your information, but Hart to Hart was in the top 20 90% of the time. It was also reported when it was canceled, it was a top rated program that ABC no longer had confidence in. Wasn't explained why but given the class I had, I was very much aware of the TV shows that were on at that time & that were top rated shows. I would love to see the stats for where Hart to Hart ended if the local Nielsen ratings were wrong.

Perhaps they did run out of ideas. After all, it is harder to find a good story line for a loving husband & wife (where do find them even on TV these days) as opposed to a wondering aimlously space ship, that is constantly invaded by weird looking aliens. Don't even need an new ideas for that one, all you need is weirder looking aliens each episode. ;0)

So all these shows are canceled due to poor ratings. let me get this strait and please correct me if I'm wrong. Some writer comes up with a new idea. Pitches it at the production company. They say yay or nay, and the show is finally put to air. We the punters start watching and a rating is achieved. Two questions how are the ratings gathered, and are they only gathered in the primary country of production and airing? The reason I ask is that in this day and age so many shows are downloaded and watched internationally, there is no way they can know just how popular a show really is. I'm going to start a new thread on this because I'm keen to get other peoples thoughts.

Flash Forward was cancelled on the BIGGEST cliff hanger. Very upsetting. I loved Joseph Fiennes in this series and you have no clue in the final seconds what Mark's status is.

Make's a great season finalle (how many star trek series have season finalles like that?!), but not SERIES finalle!

I had no clue the series was cancelled until I watched the commercials for this autumn and saw no flash forward!

Black Sash also ended very unsatisfyingly. We have no clue how these kids are ending up or where Russell's Wong's character is going to end up in his custody battle for his daughter! There was this huge drama about the father-daughter and the divorce and her mother and the step-dad thing going on! No chance to work that out to minimal closure!

And of course the great no closure: Babylon 5 Crusade!

Strazinski had his 5 year arc planned and even Walter Koenig all set to reprise his role as Bester! We were about to find out about post telepath war conditions more than that TINY glimpse from John Mattheson (Daniel Dae Kim)'s scene where he helps that one rogue telepath during the war.

I wanted to know about mattheson! As much as i love Delenn, I think John Mattheson was the most interesting character in the B5 universe! And of course, Daniel Dae Kim is very easy on the eyes. ;)
