I created this for any advice people have on Windows, Reinstalling or troubleshooting it or any downloads for Windows. These would be mostly utility and sytem type downloads, not games or anything entertainment related, other than codecs and reinstallation of media players and other system programs. Thanks to Joker for the advice.

Ok, well until I figure out how to move just one post, I'll just repost Jokers advice here, and give him Credit.

Joker said You could try the following:

this has worked for me a few times.

also this is available for dling on Mininova:

Windows Drivers CD For XP 2008

In reply to Mekon looking for Windows System Files.

Thank you Joker!

paddedbag also had a helpfull idea, which I will now post here.

I have no idea if Microsoft do that or not.

Failing that a couple of suggestions,
I am assuming you have checked your windows disc for the files? If no joy there you may be able to get a copy off a friend? I have replaced files in just that manner in the past. I have xp pro and vista ultimate on my network here and would be only too willing to send you a copy of anything you may need from them.

Thanks paddedbag.

Please feel free to post all your advice here members.

I just got an automatic restart on my pc. I have Symantec AntiVirus ver 10, but I can't get auto protect to start. My event log shows' an error about the service not starting due to a missing file, and also a completely seperate error about ntfs file system being corrupted. I'm not really very good with this kinda stuff, any ideas, anybody?

If it was me alarm bells would be ringing. Missing and corrupted files in an antivirus program could and I stress could be due to a worm or trojan.
You may need to uninstall and reinstall then do a complete scan, but before you get too alarmed check it out first with an online virus scan, Trend Micro, BitDefender etc. (I prefer the later).

I had a virus & trojan horse - one my software healed and the other couldn't be healed so I isolated it. The isolated (infected) file was one of Windows System32 .dll files and, on start up, Windows is looking for it. Its absence prevented me running Adobe Photoshop 7.

I've booted up from the cd containing Windows XP (HE) and started to install windows XP again. Then chose the option to repair rather than fully install. The repair seemed to go ok but, when I fired up my pc again the .dll file was still missing. Strange to say, though, I can now use all of my software - my pc's performance doesn't seem affected.

Oy Vey Help Me if my Symantec Antivirus didn't find the stuff BitDefender did, then should I use BitDefender? In the past I have tried many different AntiVirus programs, Avast, AVG, NOD32, Norton, and now Symantec, almost every time I get some pc problem, I use my usual Virus Scanner, it claims to find nothing, I go through weeks of different pc problems and crashes, I try spyware removers, I finally use one of the online scanners or some other AV program to scan and it finds viruses. I want one that will find all the viruses every time. Anyone have a recommendation?

Well for me there is only one AV and that is NOD32, I used to have symantec and found I was forever uninstalling and reinstalling it, there was a time in the past when symantec/nortons was the best there is, but that time is past IMHO.
But hey asking someone about their AV is like asking what make of car you drive, the answers will be as varied as there are brands.
Whatever brand you choose you can't just install it and forget, you do still need to keep an eye on what is happening on your computer. Be aware of the traffic on your computer particularly if you don't have any upload/download going (I know, I know, it hardly ever happens lol) If you aren't downloading and there is traffic, check it out immediately.
Use your windows taskmanager and check what services and processes are running, get familiar with it so you notice if something 'new' turns up. If it does check it out, its just a simple matter of typing ie 'jusched.exe' in google to find it is related to java and fine' whereas 'justched.exe' is a backdoor trojan. You will soon get used to what is on your computer.
Use the excellent 'event viewer' that is part of windows, you will find it in 'Administrative Tools' in your control panel. If you have a lock-up or a blue screen, event viewer will tell you why and point you to the microsoft knowledge base for advice and possible solution.
Use an online virus scanner occasionally just to check yours is doing it's job.
You may think I am paranoid and you may well be right but it works for me.

two more that have a free online scan (as well as symantec free scan)are:
'pc pitstop'
or
'nanoscan' which is a quick scan from panda...altho my avast does not like either of the panda scans

might not hurt to check a couple online scans and see it they all show the same viruses?

Who is your internet provider? I using Embarqfor my DSL and they have a free security program that is excellent. Perhaps your IP has a preferred security progran. A phone call to them can't hurt.

I have been warned not to use Norton Antivirus - it may be apocryphal but, in the past, I did have problems with it.

The thing is that there are so many anti-virus, spyware and firewall packages around that can conflict with one-another. I have AVG anti-virus software running but ZoneAlarm tells me that there is no anti-virus software running and do I want to invoke ZoneAlarm? I obviously input NO. Someone out there probably knows the whole story - but it's not me.

@joker I have Qwest DSL. They have a little Diagnose tool for your connection but nothing else. I finally got my NOD32 Adawatch and Spybots set up right now.

I enabled encyption on my uTorrent, but it's pretty slow going still. Sometimes my Internet acts like it's all choked up, even though I installed the TCP/IP patch to raise the # of connections XP allows to 50. It's almost like the DSL Modem/Router box is heated up, I unplug it for about ten minutes or so, depending how hot it feels, reboot the pc and then it's working internet but slow torrents. Browser is fast enough.

How's your system faring Mekon?

thanks for the info, i e-mailed him the link.

this blasted thing doesn't show up in his add/remove control panel, it interferes with online scans (they just kept re-setting to under 30 percent.

he said he hadn't even started a dl, when an 'internet explorer' box popped up saying it found a virus and asked if he wanted to quarantine it(or something along that line). he clicked to quarantine the virus......

be careful my friends!

@appara

I have never had this bar but usually those type of things don't turn up in add/remove, they turn up in internet explorer in 'tools/manage add-ons' he should be able to disable it from there.
But of course it still needs to be removed from the system as well.

If I may make a suggestion. Use mozilla firefox instead of internet explorer. Many of these types of things target internet explorer. This would not have happened on firefox.
Firefox is a free download, you can leave internet explorer on your computer, there are occasional times when I use it for various reasons but for day to day use firefox is the way to go IMHO.

Firefox is really good, more secure, with less of the stuff IE comes with to suck up RAM and Processor power. They had tabbed browsing before IE.

I think my downloads are only going this slow because people are seeding slow, because my BB9 Ul's went very quicklyby comparison to my Xena and Xfiles. Both of those have a number of public trackers on them. Can there be too many trackers? might that slow things down?
Moderator

Nagila thetrekhippy

I must say I have never heard of that.
I was always under impression the more trackers locked in the better.
With Utorrent you can ask to d/l same torrent again from a different site and whilst it tells you are already d/l it. Utorrent also asks if you want to add any trackers you are not using but are available in this next attempt to d/l.
So more the better seems to be the way to go.
guru
joker
Do not think that if you have a lot of trackers for a torrent that it hurts dl speed. What is more likley to do that is number of seeders, leechers, your dl speed from IP and your torrent program seetings.Of course if your IP starts to slap blockers on it will also hurt.
guru

tcp, ports , open them up "safely " for speed !!
Moderator

Wow, well cool, the more trackers the better is very good indeed. I don't think my ISP has started blocking yet, at least I have never heard from them on my torrenting addiction (LOL).

I have opened my ports, one that is above 16000, for both tcp and udp, and utorrent is showing that my connection is open and I'm good to go.

I have a new problem, with Spybots, the latest version started crashing and even w/ uninstall and reinstall it still crashes, even the updater. Anyone have any idea what I can do?

I'm getting alot of popups now too, after having gone to the btchat site once. Just Once, in IE. Right now, I'm using Firefox, which should help with the popups.

Thanks for all the great advice, and please keep on posting the good intel and links to good sources for things that help keep windows running free and clear of spyware and viruses!

so now, i'm having something choke up my dsl bandwidth. all I can see so far is ekrn.exe is making alot of connections. utorrent is normal, this site I can get, when I try to go to google main it works but on search no luck. Yahoo.com same. eztv main comes up ok, but linking through to either mininova, eztv forum, or eztv show pages no luck. using firefox. also using nod32, pg2 (yes I tried disabling it) & adawatch(yes i disabled that one too). Any ideas? what is ekrn.exe anyway and why do i have a dllhost.exe running under System and why won't they stay off? I am clueless. help if you can. TY in Advance.
guru
paddedbag
Nagila trek,

ekrn.exe is part of your NOD32. Something is amiss here. My advice is get off the net asap, uninstall NOD32 and do a clean install of it, then see what you got.
If it is running ok do a full scan of your computer, it could be a something nasty that has attacked your NOD32. If that doesn't bring something up then do one of the free online scans.
Bottom line is something is very wrong when NOD32 starts to play up.
I am assuming you have had NOD on for awhile without trouble?

Best of luck

@Pb This time around I have had Nod for about a month. Thanks for reminding me of the free online scans I always forget about those. I appreciate your information on ekrn.exe, I will reinstall Nod clean asap.

nagila trek,

I read up some on your problem, and seems you are not an island in having trouble with ekrn.exe. Lots of theories why it gives people trouble and it seems to be with version 3 of NOD32 only.
Recommendation is to go back to version 2.7 if that is the case.

Thanks so much! I may if it happens again but for now it seems fine. I don't know why it went nuts like that. I did a netstat -a and saw ekrn just trying to connect like crazy. After I uninstalled mIRC, I noticed my Adawatch programs RegSheild was having to constantly block a bunch of reg change events coming from winlogon.exe and explore.exe. So, I deleted the mIRC keygen and uninstalled mIRC and WinSCP, then I uninstalled nod and reinstalled it and now things seem fine again. I'm going to use firefox chatzilla and see if that's ok for the chat.

Of late, there have been several new Lavasoft Adaware cracks using a .dll patch for the liscense that have been offered on Demonoid that simply do not work properly. One ate up my processor power like a trojan and the other said there wasn't enough memory to carry out the adawatch function and that files were missing etc... Just wanted to let everyone know and also to bump the thread.

Whooo hey you guys, I just made my own custom up to date windows xp sp3 install disc. Here is a link to the site that showed me the easy way. http://www.supportpcs.co.uk/installcd/winxp.html

At the part where it says "Slipstream Service Pack 2 into your installation files" you can do it with sp3 just download the sp3 install from microsoft to any place on your pc you can find easily, then use the name of that installation package, including the .exe instead of the sp2. So it would be more like this

2 SLIPSTREAM COMMAND
Click Start > Run, type the following into the command box and click OK:

c:\sp2.exe -s:c:\bcd\cds\wxppro\files\

^ ^^^^
(c: or current location of sp3.exe) (replace sp2.exe with name of sp3 install package)

The site says to put the sp3.exe in the same director as everything else but you don't have to since you will be integrating it into the copy of your i386 folder. It works really great and easy.

For people having trouble with downloading videos from YouTube, Thor has sent me a link that works very well.

http://keepvid.com/

Post the link to the video from YouTube or other website, click download, choose which file you want! Simple!

TY Thor.

PS a note about bumping this thread. I think if anyone wants to bump any thread they should try to add something to it besides just 'bump' which is another reason I posted this here.
Just IMHO, not a site requirement. Thanks to all who post up here!
