On linux I use something called AviDemux. With it I can do basic editing (it seeks out adverts automatically) plus can chop useless bits from the ends. Also has a whole collection of filters for both audio and video, depending on the task at-hand.

The thing I like about it is that it is small and lean and easy to learn.

If you want something more industrial-strength, you can try Cinelerra:
http://heroinewarrior.com/cinelerra.php3

Which is also free but would only suggest this one if you are doing a movie as in for a studio or something.

Of course if you are doing Windows, there are 1001 different editors available.

Thx whiplash2007, not for studio or anything just for my own pleasure, some movies are so dark you can't see anything or my eyes are getting old :( I'm using windows, I just thought maybe there was an easy one out there, that I could use.

Clue: While you would like something to lighten movies (these wouldn't be camcorder specials would they?) I would like to find one that does an audio-filter where it does what is called compression I think; basically keeps the sound from getting too loud or too soft...you know those kinds of movies, like (for example) the matrix where the music is so loud yet if you turn it down to control that, the voices are lost..or sound FX that are too loud...this is my wish..

Joker; anything that runs on linux; for basic editing/filtering I use avidemux. I have a handful of other tools, would prefer something I can script....

I use VLC and went through all the toolbar options etc and could not find anything that lightens/brightens the image being played. Could you elaborate? thx

They was cams because I couldn't wait for something better to come out lol, but I get movies from another site now and always good copies. I know what you mean about the sound thingy big pain in the butt, I don't know what to use to fix it though sorry, but all these other helpful peeps do :-)

Clue: back in the day I ran across a few of those; once the novelty of getting a movie I just *couldn't* wait to see wore off, I was left watching dark-assed movies where you see people getting up to get popcorn, all usually the size of a freaking postage stamp. Bah. Glad to have todays "alternatives".

WRT the sound issue, I am sure I have the answer sitting on my hard drive (mencoder and ffmpeg are incredibly powerful and equally un-approachable by the neophyte), just need to take the time to learn. Current trick I am trying to learn is to correct A/V sync issues...Ratatouille ripped 1.9 seconds out of phase, no idea why..well I do, just am too lazy I guess to fix it...drugs can help with the sync issues but only on a temporary basis...;)

Google for the Virtual Dub. It does everything you mentioned and it is a free program.
