I was thinking of hosting an IRC Chat room for sharetv but I don't have the capacity to do it 24/7, so if anyone wants to share the duty sign up here.

I was just going to run an IRC chat room off my pc, and whenever my shift ends just let someone else open one. I can do it without a server.

We should have probably at least 4 people, me plus 3 to do this right. So far I have just the one confirmed offer to assist from Porno there. When I get 2 more, we can work out what shifts we want. I'm usually better with second and third shifts. So I can run it either from Afternoon through like Midnight or 1 am, Or I can run it from like 1 am to 7 or 8 am.

Why not just set up a channel on a pre-existing network? Like irc.gamesurge.net -- then the room is always up, and people dont need to worry about who to connect to, it stays the same.

thetrekhippy, you hace a great idea there. I would think that this is something that should be made available by this site or at least attached to the sites serve at no cost. If you have ever used WINMX they have real neet litle thing where you can send instant PMs(private messagesse) to anyone signed in. That would be real nice to have here.

Yeah i liked the chats in winmx you could even browse peoples shares and such.

Update. I tried to register the channel. It didnt work. HOwever if you want to join a non-registered version, you just need to irc://irc.gamesurge.net or visit http://www.gamesurge.net/chat/ and type /join #sharetv

I also tried to register. I think it's because it's not really Game related. I guess I didn't really understand how IRC works when I started this thread. I though I just would open IRC and find a way to create a chat room. If anyone can tell me how to do it I'd be happy to try. Or if someone wants to do it on their own system, that'd be cool too. I'm not sure what I need besides my pc and my dsl connection to run just a regular irc chat room.

you would have to install some irc software that would run as a server, then you would need to set up your computer to allow those incomming connections, and then you would need to have a static ip address so that people could always connect to you (with your probably dynamic ip address now, it could change, and everyone would have to figure out your new ip to chat again) also you would need to have your computer on 24/7 and its not somthing you can spread accross several people (same ip address problem)


best bet is to find some irc server out there that will let you register a room called #shareTV

I'm still working on figuring this out, but when I do this is where the information will be posted. I have two volunteers to help out now. Thanks!

What type of chat room do we want. A chat room with file sharing happening and discussed openly in the room, or a chat room with file sharing happening but under cover? For now I think we should make it a No sharing, while allowing discussion of sharing chat, being as we don't share on site. What do you think?

I agree I think this is the way to go.

irc = internet replay chat. It was the first type of chat room on the www and the first type of file sharing.
You need a 'client' to use it. ie a software program, I recommend mIRC available for download from www.mirc.com

Irc has always been a free a program as far as I know I havent use it in ages

Open window
type "apt-get install xchat"
15 seconds later run xchat and chat with Ruby, Padded and Trek.

kolbinfo you are right mIRC does cost $20, that is if you are not using one of the many fixes available on torrents, which of course no one here would do.

lol well, of course not paddedbag. I am using mIRC and I think that's the most used one. Firefox has Chatzilla, which is fine for just joining an chat room that's already there. We will work on getting some FAQ links and posting them here.

$20 is the cost of the software itself capt. the mIRC client for irc. It used to be free but that changed about 18 months ago. Everything else as you say is free.

There is 30 day free trial, anyone who wants to give it a try, download from www.mirc.com and come join us and we will sort out the registration of the program.

If Windows folk need a free one, go to nonags.com and search for IRC clients.

I followed whips advice(thx whip) above re: nonags.com & search for irc clients,I then chose
Ice chat, as descibed for beginners to intermediate users.Once it was installed a box appeared with
Irc.quasenet.org at the top(i think it was quasenet) I deleted it & typed in Irc.phazenet.com then click on join,
When the phazenet page came up I clicked on channels,then type in #shareTV,click on join...voila!
that is basically what I recall from memory,

I tried out chatzilla that comes as a free addon to mozilla firefox.
It is very easy to use. Here is how to connect to the chat room.
Once you have chatzilla installed, type this in the typing bar at the bottom of the program /server irc.phazenet.com
That will connect you to phazenet, once there type this in the type bar /join #shareTV

Thats it! it is that simple. Will see you in the chat room.

Thats what I am using on linux ATM. Pretty basic but doesn't rattle.

In other forums where I do this we tend to coordinate times so ppl from different time zones can plan.

When it finally logs you in, do /join sharetv

I need to throw out one more thing that first-timers need to understand if they want this to work:

Trek, Luacheia, Paddedbag and I try to spend a little and sometimes a lot of time in there so that if someone shows up from ShareTV we have a welcome for them and can help start conversations. However we are people too and if the room is empty when we get there, we cannot just sit there and stare at an empty room waiting for someone to show up. Sometimes we have to get up an use the facilities, sometimes we are posting on ShareTV as I am now and are not looking at the chat client when you show up. Give us a moment or three and we will generally show up and give you a proper "Howdy". But give us a chance. I have seen people show up, wait 10 seconds or less and leave. Some folks cannot even type hello and hit enter that fast.

Just had someone do that about 10 mins ago. So we really are trying to make a go of this and when 2 people are there it kicks ass and sometimes we get many people from all corners of the globe on at the same time and it is doubly fun.

You will find a lot more conversation that way! :)

Tried for a half hour to get it to work,nothing.I have my nick in there,type in "/sever irc.phazenet.com" nothing happens.Do I need to choose one of the clients chatzilla provides?

clients chatzilla provides...hmmm Nog I do not understand that....chatzilla *is* a client. did you install and run chatzilla and have a larger box at the top part of the screen where you see conversations and a smaller window on the bottom. you should be able to enter that line in the smaller window and it should take you to phazenets servers. from there you just join our room (sharetv) and we are there.

Small caveat: this is how it looks/acts under Linux. Windows may look or act slightly different. Also, these commands work with nearly any IRC client (nonags.com has some free ones for windows and that site was reliable when I had a Windows dependency)..

Sorry whip, I probably meant networks.In the large white box it reads "client"and has links for help and other things.It also has a list of networks?;efnet,freenode,etc.Do I need to choose one of these?

Nog I get it. I know whats going wrong...I think. Go to the following tabs in preferences and be sure to set the following:
Tab General: Nickname. Set this to the nick that you registered with phazenet.com

Tab Startup: Go to the autoconnect urls and add irc.phazenet.com

From there I clicked apply and went to the main screen and entered the /server... line.

It then (eventually) tells me to register my nick so I enter in the same box:
/msg nickserv identify which is what I registered on phazenet.

Then:
/join sharetv

And there was trek hippy. Is it possible you are behind a firewall?

Whip is correct on the Chatzilla instructions, it worked for me. Didn't even have to adjust my Firewall settings. I'm sorry it's not working for some of you. It may not work if you are on a slow connection like dial-up, are using your internet for other things at the same time, or are behind a Firewall or Router or an IP blocker like PG2 may even cause a problem. I agree with him as well on not being able to stare at an empty room, at the same time as I confess to not having been able to be there at all for the last three days or so. As well, there are many members in different time zones, and the chat stays open even if no one is in at all.

I still have to share this pc, but I have finished the Invasion Iowa torrent and will be on site and in chat more often now.

Notice:: For purposes of Quality Control, If anyone wants to write up a nice step by step on how to use mIRC, and ChatZilla to connect to the room, please send your submissions to my e-mail first ckhsug06@yahoo.com This way it's double checked for accuracy, spelling, etc....

The later will take you nowhere.

ummm another thing that may be causing nogs problem, sometimes for reasons that I have never figured out, some people will have problems connecting to the generic network address irc.phazenet.com, but have no trouble at all connecting to a specific server on that netowork, so nog try these instead of irc.phazenet.com.

Now that we have the Chat room set up it's time to start enjoying ourselves with it. Of course, I'd love to see more people in to do that with. I'm sure more people would stay if there were something fun to do. So, if any of you have ideas, please post them here or come on into the chat and shout out about them in there.

You shouldn't have to register it again hopefully. The registration will remain current as long as the channel doesn't remain empty of an aop or a sop for I think? would have to look it up, but off top of my head, 30 days.
At the moment that is not likely to happen.

As for something to do in there, do we really need this? whenever there is more than 1 in there we talk up a storm and would have no need of any other amusement. Just my opinion.

As for something fun to do, well, lol It's just for fun, so, no probably not a need, but I want to see if it helps attract more people, and It'd be nice to have something handy for sometime in the future when it starts getting like some of the old winmx chat rooms with lots of lurky turky's like me. I'd love to have sort of a 'Bot' to like serve food or something. Or a Trivia game maybe. Or even just some random art.
