The Greatest Football Team Remembered It was 3.04 a.m. February 6th 1958 50 Years ago today. It still seems like only yesterday Pause for a while and a tale I'll relate of a team we, justly, had cause to call great A long time may elapse ere we see such a team for Busby had skimmed all the top of the cream. In England, Europe and yes World football too these youngsters knew what it was, that they had to do No bragging or boasting, just get on with the games and the best of the rest will remember their names. Remember them well and Honour them true. Reflect on the glory they brought home to you. BYRNE, JONES, COLEMAN,TAYLOR, PEGG, WHELAN and BENT How could they know that their lives had been spent. CRICKMER, CURRY and WHALLEY the gent Who'd work night and day a defeat to prevent. Then alas two weeks after we're sorry to say we heard DUNCAN EDWARDS had passed away. Can you forget them? Well brother just try while you wipe away those tears from your eye. ALL were taken from us, so long before their prime Oh what they would have given, if given the time The good Lord above must have made a decree I need you in Heaven for all eternity And somewhere above they watch as we play for United we were and United we stay For no matter what the pundits may say You were the foundation of United today The World will remember as each of us do The greatest team ever, was the team that was you. And somewhere perhaps on the Old Trafford ground If we listen with care we may hear a strange sound As up in the clouds with pride you look down and see our Babes wearing YOUR Triple Crown. |

@quark, What happened with them? Was Enghish team that all died in a aviation disaster? England is the cradle of the football (soccer)! I never did hear anything about these men, but I am certain that they must have made much for their nation, at a time that to be football player was not synonymous of wealth and yes, of bravery and passion. |

A wonderful poem, did you write it? The sort of tribute that speaks to those who know and makes someone like me want to know the details. |

@singlew4 Thanks saved me posting it. It's a very good condensed telling of what happened and why it still hurts. |

I am not into football but I was a teenager in 1958 and I well remember that crash. It is up there with the death of JFK, landing on the moon and 9/11 Twin Towers. |

@quark I just finished of see in the ESPN Brazil, scenes of the team in acting and scenes of a game, two weeks after the crash. A today interview with a survivor, I think he was the coach that survivor. He has, until today, a terrible feeling of guilt. He said that he always ask to God why he survived and not the others. It also did show a very beautiful religious ceremony that did happen today in a square with more than a thousand persons. It is remarkable, how until today, fifty years after, the tragedy is remembered! |

Thanks Quark, this is real nice! I myself have not been very interested in sports, but I do appreciate the hard work the team members go to in order to entertain the fans, and I appreciate you posting this here for all of us to remember them and pass it on. |
